Happier news for Greater Manchester today.

Despite the 5000 rise in cases and a rise in the NW that was modest pro rata to the national rise - just 332 - all that rise was in other parts of the NW with places like Knowsley and Liverpool up a bit today and indeed tiny little Knowsley becoming the third borough in the UK to have 10% of its citizens having tested positive by achieving a Pop score of 10,020. Behind Merthyr and Blackburn also in the 10,000 club.

However, in Greater Manchester most places did well and whilst there were a few ups and downs nothing much changed overall.

Five boroughs under 100. Several others only just over it, A better day for Stockport. Manchester up a tad to 247 - the highest - but nobody else higher than 126.

All in all GM fell - but don't get too excited it was by just 3.

But given the fact the NW as a region went up by more than London did and at 3329 today was just 747 behind London - the only other region that is above the NW in numbers now - the better numbers in GM versus the rest of the NW today meant a big fall in the % of the NW total from yesterdays 36.7% to just 33.0%

Greater Manchester seems to have achieved a plateau of cases at the moment with the last 4 day - despite UK numbers going up and down a fair bit - being:- 1074 - 1003 - 1100 and 1097 today.

That makes sense. And I agree about the deaths. Sadly well over what I had hoped we could be keeping it down to but likely inevitable once we decided to let what will no doubt come to be known as Killer Christmas to occur.

Though I know it would likely have been impossible to entirely prevent. Even had we tried that I don't think we did anywhere near enough.

How many visited their oldies as 'they have not seen us all year' and as a consequence will now not see them at all ever again.

I know how hard a decision this was about Christmas but this was tragically so predictable and was predicted - in here and no doubt lots of other places.

So I fear that will never reduce the sadness that we sleepwalked into a a tragedy worse than it needs to have been because the outcome was never in doubt.

what did the rest do Europe do for Xmas?

well the mrs was telling me the other day a house up the road had a very large xmas party and then a new years party probably more than 100 people in and out during that week, the reply they gave when questioned was get fucked we do what we want, the owner of that house is now in hospital being vented
Ironic that the very people who are now trying to save his life were the very people he was sticking two fingers up to last month. Maybe if he and is ilk knew that if they engage in criminal acts then NHS treatment would be withheld then the number of illegal gatherings might reduce.

973 England hospital deaths - down from the last two Wednesdays both over 1000.

A flicker of light here despite the horrifically high numbers still. Signs of us plateauing.

!38 from the NW though Well up on the higher total numbers from the past two Wednesdays.

First hint that the NW problems are starting to translate into higher deaths.

Just as they take vaccines away. And why I was concerned. As it has been clear that the NW was a problem area at present where cases were not falling quite as much as they are elsewhere. Especially in Greater Manchester,

I hope the likes of Andy Burnham point this out and ask why they do not take the vaccine from Yorkshire where cases keep falling to near record low levels yet have been having the most supplies of any region.
Looking at the latest 7 day average cases by Local Authority it actually looks like it's Yorkshire which is seeing the growth in cases (rate increasing in Sheffield, Barnsley, Rotherham, Leeds etc), so using that logic of targeting the problems areas there should be a shift from the North West (7 day case rate dropping) to Yorkshire !

I think the objective should be to ensure that people in the most vulnerable groups get their vaccinations at the same time across the country, as far as possible.

I would agree but is not what is happening, As Granada Reports showed just now. A GP in Davyhulme has no vaccine to give any of the vulnerable she should be using it on and only knows it has been reallocated.

Hope nobody in here has relatives in that area. Or the others it will apply to not just next week either by the sounds of it.

She says it make them feel like they are being punished for doing their job too well,

And if any of you are in tier 5 of this roll out you are the ones facing bigger waits as next in line after mid February and not only facing low supplies but calls for other groups to be escalated such as teachers.

I have no problem with that as they should be protected and I started out as a teacher myself many moons ago. But the 60 - 70s are going to face longer waits it seems as price for this policy and they might not be happy certainly given the reports everywhere of younger people being offered jabs unexpectedly.>

Fairness and balance of risk is difficult to get right but it will play into the hands of the anti vaxxers if it looks like policy is being made on demand.

As they didn’t have Boris in charge spent a lot more on presents for the elderly than us I would have thought. What a ridiculous question.

what the hell are you on about? Why is it ridiculous to ask what lockdown happened iN Europe over Xmas?
