Over 100 fined by GM police for breaking Covid rules last night.

Including breaking up many parties. A rave in Wigan and a mass brawl in Manchester city centre involving a party of 30 people.

A pub in Marple Bridge was also fined for being open illegally.

Absolutely pissed off with these idiots. Me and Mrs Flyer are both at high risk because of health issues and these twats continue to ignore the law and common sense. Hope they all get it, the bastards.

But they'll carry on because there is no fitting deterrent. If we can put up the emergency hospitals in a few days, we should have built a few temporary jails made from mesh fencing, get some army lads to work with the police to round these idiots up and not release them until they've paid a £500 fee. If you don't pay, you don't get out.

And as for the organizers who are effectively saying 'we know we're increasing the chance of the virus spreading and people dying, but hey there's a few quid to be made' the fuckers should be locked up for 12 months as well as the £10,000 fine

I would imagine that most of those were given strong reminders when they went for the first dose that they really had to return to have the second dose. Now, there will be people thinking they are being denied something they were told they definitely needed and thus consider themselves highly vulnerable again and fretting needlessly.
Exactly. My in-laws were told they definitely needed a second dose in 3 weeks and therefore assume the effectiveness of the dose they had before Christmas may be compromised, particularly with GPs and the drug manufacturer expressing doubts. Very poorly handled; the Government knew how many doses they had.

Just driven through Uppermill and there's three places on the High Street selling coffee. Loads of customers all crowded round on the pavement, no-one keeping any distance apart, no face masks, total dickheads.

Also highest amount of irresponsible dick heads in the world and fucking useless politicians of all parties

vaccines will eventually cover all that - in a matter of weeks. Highest and fastest roll out of vaccines is at odds with useless politicians comment.

I wish I had your confidence Worsley. In a matter of weeks leaves plenty of time for more total incompetence to rear its ugly head. After last night's lack of behavior and the lack of preparation in providing the infrastructure for the rollout of vaccine distribution I am slightly less positive than you. Anyways happy new year to you and hope all your family and friends are well on the way to recovery

What happened in that Belgian care home is terrifying evidence of what this new strain can do and appears to be doing in the UK. Not even sure that was the new strain as the old one is bad enough, The new one just much faster at spreading to almost everyone in contact.

It was taken into the home by 'Santa' - who proved a super spreader.

As a result 85 residents and 40 staff all caught it and 28 have died.

One person with this new strain without themselves being that ill or even knowing they have got it (many with the new strain are under 30 and likely have few symptoms not common in Winter) can accidentally destroy countless lives.

This is why the landscape has changed and nothing less than full lockdown pretty much immediately should have been introduced.

We all know it will happen. But equally doing it even a week later than it should have been is going to cost us dear. Not just in terms of deaths. As we have just seen how much worse one week has made things.

The worst thing you can do if you are walking towards an uncovered mine shaft is slow down and wait until you fall in after it has become deeper than ever. As your chances of surviving let alone of getting out of there are going to be much harder and take much longer.
It doesn't need to be that direct contact either.

I posted this in the old thread last night, and shows what can happen, however unlikely it might be.

A colleague of mine is isolating because his daughter tested positive last Sunday, last I heard he hadn't been tested and had no symptoms, but I'm trying to stay out of the loop for now, as I was on the desk the day after he was last there. Luckily I'm paranoid about cleanliness since early this year, but I worked that day with 3/4 others who'd been with him for the 2 previous days, and this exactly shows how it can be spread.

Kid I've never met, and live 30 miles from it, caught it, probably at school, she might have given it to her dad (we don't know yet but given he's in the house with her quite likely), who might then have given it to 3/4 colleagues he worked with for 12 hours, twice, who subsequently could have given it to me, all over several days.

Yes lots of "might be's" obviously, but people need to know/think how it can spread whilst everyone involved is still being sensible, and following the rules, and all of this in tier 4.

53, 285 cases and 613 all settings deaths.

This is data from England and Scotland only and deaths only England.

Hence being low.

One thing about the Oxford vaccine that is puzzling me is why the government didn't place an order with Astra Zeneca to produce say 20 million doses before final approval. It probably was apparent quite a while ago that the vaccine was effective and more or less certain to be approved. At a cost of less than £3 a shot it would have been small change in the overall scheme of things even in the unlikely event that it didn't gain approval.
I think they did months ago, but they haven't been able to supply that yet.

Only care home residents and NHS staff were planned before Christmas originally I believe.
Might have been the case, but it's not what happened, my dad 82, and living quite healthily in his own home, had his 10 days before christmas, he does have some underlying health issues, but I'd argue my mum has more, but she's not 80 yet.

Perhaps she’s been so busy that she hasn’t seen the news then?
She only got the email that day to say her vaccination had been cancelled and the point that she is making is that she did not consent to have the injection given in a way that was not told before she got the initial vaccine.
I disagree with her but if you are making that point the time to do it is when you are told you are not getting the injection so yesterday was a fair time to do it.
Disagree with her completely though.

I'm no expert, but some people are questioning whether having one dose of the Pfizer vaccine and then a dose of the AZ vaccine some time after is effective, and it sounds like there's not been much, if any, research on this. They have every reason to voice their concern.
Yeah, this was my reason for putting it as alarming, as the original dose period has gone from 21 days to 12 weeks? Surely that’d hinder the effectiveness of the 1st dose? Maybe I’m getting confused.

REGIONAL SCOREBOARD

Not good news for the North West.

The only region in the north still going up today despite lower numbers

We are starting to look on the same track as the South just a week or two behind unfortunately.
