Constantly bombarding the thread with how good the government is doing when there are posters who know people that have died is crass and idiotic.

my post was nothing to do with the government really. It was discussing the route out of it.

16 days for me, resumed working but was knackered for about 2 months at the end of the day, in bed early, plus side, I've never, as an adult, slept so well. I'm self employed but would not have gone back so early otherwise, give it a month at least, your life is more important.

Has the tiredness worn off as time has went on? Yeah, I don't plan on rushing back. Officially have to isolate until next Wednesday in any case but after then it'll be a case of wait and see.

Work phoned a couple of times to check up on how I'm doing. Weird getting asked the question 'is it like the flu' or 'is it like a really bad cold' when in truth it's neither. I can't put my finger on it, but it feels a bit different altogether. One minute I'm gasping for air in the middle of a coughing fit, heart feels absolutely racing, 10mins later I feel like I could go a 5 mile run. Also the question 'When are you likely to be back?' simply gets met with a response of whenever this thing fully decides to fuck off.

your response to them should be 'fuck off'!

I'm fine now but reckon it took around 10 weeks in total to recover fully, I know you are a runner and younger than me so you will probably need less time but as I posted the other day about my mates colleague rushing back is not advisable.

I hated being asked that question by a previous employee. I rarely had a day off ill so when I did it was almost like they didn't know what to say. My response was ' I am not a mind reader'. I have never understood how people can say I am ill but I will be in tomorrow. How the fuck do they know. Surely you can't go back for at least 10 days anyway so why are they hassling you.

A lot of Employers now have the "return to work interview". First question "how are you feeling now" it's a punitive discourse designed to make employees feel guilty about taking sick leave. Necessary for some who take the piss but has to be inclusive and genuine employees suffer from it.

KFC in failsworth employs a security guard at night because of scrotes im sure these billion pound companies can afford a few doormen 24/7, if you dont like it im sure the corner shop will let you in and pay extortionate prices with no mask.
Thing is I'd happily pay 1-2% extra for my shopping for it to be safer.

Load up with Vit D 3000% NRV a day - it will only start to kick in in 5 days time but it could make all tge difference.
Thoughts and Prayers.
Get well soon

I'm wondering the fact i've worked from home for nearly a year and can be more productive - is a strong case to refuse to go back full time in the office ? not sure what the policy on all this will be as so many millions will now want to work from home.

I would imagine bigger companies will look at the bottom line and take it from there, I worked from home for a while and loved it, can't do it now as I'm a delivery driver!!

Ok, fair enough, reported to have said though as opposed to having been seen to say it. Slight bit of poetic licence in there.

Bild is the German Sun for sensationalism, but she does appear to have used that phrase.

It's clumsy, but as often with one sentence quotes, it's about context. Other sources indicate that it was part of discussion on the impact of the mutated strain, and the differentiation between the effect it caused in comparison to the original.

Thanks for that.

Living adjacent to Blackpool I was somewhat surprised that they rank so high particularly when the cases per 100k is relatively low. Total cases per 100k is coming in around 5%, much lower than Manchester, Liverpool etc at around 7%.

So unless I'm misunderstanding I'm more likely to contract it in Manchester than Blackpool, but more likely to die in Blackpool than in Manchester.
Yes, and it may be focused around where there are hospitals as someone from 30 miles away dying in a hospital with no family likely gets registered there. It is at least possible that will register the death to the location of the hospital rather than the patients home.

But then you would assume that would bump up major cities with big hospitals and it does not seem to do that with say Manchester or Birmingham.

I have just seen they hope to have everyone over 50 vaccinated by spring. Why would we not go back to normal then???
Because we still need greater immunity across the population than just the vulnerable and over 50s.

The more a virus spreads, the more likely it is to mutate. Eventually a mutation may be one that gets past the vaccine and all that hard work we’ve done through restrictions and vaccinations (and all those who’ve been seriously ill or died) will be undone.

Let’s take our time, do it properly, get the vast majority vaccinated and open things up later in the year.

Merkel has said that Germany expects restrictions to be in place until early April to try to protect them from the British virus (which could increase their cases ten fold).
I trust she did not call it that. There is no proof it originated in Britain and new ones as virulent seem to be springing up all the time as this virus mutates. Higher infectivity will be a natural strategy developed just to combat the measures globally to infect in the original way. It is no real surprise.

The UK government may have a lot to answer for but blaming this variant on it as the scourge of the world would be pretty unfair.

I see a tabloid says she did. Normally she has been pretty fair over Brexit but our response in dealing so tardily with its spread is certainly world beating in stupidity so I guess it is to be expected.

My friend who lives in Virginia called it something similar and said she was chided by her son who is an ER doctor working in the hospital in Seattle where the original US outbreak patients were taken from a rest home. He told her and she told me long before Britain reacted nearly a year ago that this virus was the real deal. So much - being American - she went straight out and bought up weeks of supplies, a hazmat suit and a gun.

I thought she was utterly crackers but then she is American. But two or three weeks later it became clear that her son knew what he was talking about. And my keenness to follow the data for myself began. I locked myself down about 10 days before Boris did anything. I think that is about my go to response now. Do what Boris will do when its too late on my own but before it is too late\

Anyhow her ER doc son told her not to blame Britain as the US have a pretty similar variant that is like it and spreading fast and these are popping up in a few places.

International travel may be not getting back to normal for a very long time. This will take more than vaccinating 24/7 in the UK to achieve 'herd immunity'' unless we plan sealing ourselves off from the world and living as an island self sufficiently until the planet catches up.

Asking someone how they are is a punitive thing now?
