So the economy fell by 9.9% last year which is better than economists’ recent estimates. The Bank of England reckon the economy will start to bounce back from April / May when they anticipate things starting to open up and people who’ve saved during the pandemic start spending.

It also grew by 1% for the last quarter of 2020 which was much better than expected. No surprise what slant the BBC are running with

I don’t mind the BBC using this angle when the economy is growing from a low base. It’s factually correct and 1% growth on where our economy has fallen to (especially when shops were kept open for Christmas sales) isn’t a great deal.

It’s gearing up for a significant recovery that’s going to be crucial. As I’ve said on here before, that might be people getting local trades people to do house / garden improvements, staycations, buying U.K. built cars and other products etc.

He can fuck off tbh. Absolutely no way they can say that's necessary until then right now. You can't tell people to write-off 2021 after a vaccination campaign that we dont know works yet or not. It'll utterly destroy public confidence.

Also, try telling the public they can't be near their loved ones if this comes true. Utter nonsense.

Social distancing should be expected for a long time mate, you will be able to see your loved ones this year but you’ll need to wear masks in shops and stay two metres until Covid is making no impact.

The vaccine news is smashing and we’re getting there but you’ll be able to be near them, just don’t touch them.

Really angry about that Autumn stuff tbh. Unbelievable.

I'm fed up with the lies, it's death by 1,000 cuts. We were promised more freedoms once the elderly and vulnerable were vaccinated and now he's going back on his word. Nobody in this country voted for control and measures akin to living in North Korea. It should be our choice if we want to risk mixing and actually living not just existing. Like people risk driving at 80mph every day and some die as a result. The scared and vulnerable can stay indoors as they are doing now anyway, enough is enough.

ugh i hate this shit so much. If that's ture, and i see it's rumoured to be part of the road map, that's probably cricket matches, and football etc out until 2022?

furthermore, i am looking forward to seeing this roadmap and getting some structure, i hope outdoor sport is back on very soon as that was allowed even in tier 4 from memory. Need my footy team back.

If/when this is announced its going to devastate so many people (including probably myself to be honest). A lot of us got through 2020 by adopting a mindset of 'oh well next year will be better' or 'just think, this time next year this will all be over and we'll be able to look back on everything that happened with amazement'. Well, there's now a creeping realisation that next year isn't going to be better and where we are at next year is pretty much the exact same place we were at last year. So many people rolled things like tickets to events or holidays over from 2020 to 2021 without even thinking there was a possibility they wouldn't happen again. Well we're now reaching the stage where we are having to accept they won't and it is pretty sickening.
And before anyone jumps on this, yes I am very aware that it is an incredibly self-centred and selfish view of what is a much bigger picture and yes I have many many far more important things to be thankful for but I'm just a bit fed up at the moment and felt the need to vent!

I know but we want that to be the final chapter and not Chapter 2. I do think that we are over the worst now but I am just cautioning that the vaccine evasion threat carries more risk than it once did.

Like the Flu, it is unlikely there will be a final chapter.
It might end up an ongoing battle.

The good news is the whole world is now alert.
If only for economic reasons, governments will respond faster with more resources.
The experience gained will make that response better.

There is still a chance that it may just simply vanish.

That’s pissed me right off , the rumour about social distancing till Autumn . Where has this news come from ? I think once i have my vaccine nothing will stop me going round to my elderly parents house .

I'm beginning to get a very uneasy feeling about the whole situation. By design or accident governments have gained total control over their people and are rolling out more and more measures on a daily basis. This is never going to end I fear.

No but like the flu most of us lived with it without any worries. We vaccinated the vulnerable annualy, those that didn't get vaccinated through choice we hoped were okay but we didn't change our lives to protect. Most that got flu were ill. Every year some, mainly elderly ended up in hospital but at manageable levels. Sadly some died.
If we can get to the same situation with covid, we will have to re learn to live with that as we used to live our lives normally with flu and pneumonia..

Define impact! They can seriously fuck off if they think I won't be hugging my parents for the rest of the year if vaccines work and cases/deaths basically disappear like they did in the summer. They'll lose an awful lot of public confidence too. It's unreasonable to expect 0 deaths and 0 cases. Never gonna happen.

Unless I've misunderstood, does social distancing till Autumn not just mean not having someone breathing on your neck in the supermarket for a few more months, or being limited to groups of six like last summer again? Or are people reading that like we will be in lockdown till autumn?

Selfish sod

Explain what's selfish about it? Whether people decide to mix and try and live some form of life rather than just existing or not it's not changing anything for the vulnerable they still are told to stay at home. By my age definition I'm probably classified as vulnerable anyway but staying locked up forever will kill me more quickly than getting some normality back.

It means no parties, no clubs, no pubs as we know them, no football matches as we know them, no going to see your parents and sitting without masks and distancing.

It's not normal life like we can see in Australia, New Zealand and China. It's control.

We bought concert tickets in February 2020 for October 2020 and it was put back year. Now we've had an email to say put back till October 2022,frustrating but what can you do. Makes you appreciate what life was like before and hopefully will be again sooner than later

I genuinely believe this will be the straw that breaks the camel's back if they insist on this. I've been very fucking compliant, to great detriment to my mental health, even basically permanently damaging relationships with my family members who all disagree on this. I just can't reasonably go along with this if they really think keeping people apart forever until Covid disappears permanently is a reasonable request. I can't imagine i'll be alone with this view.

To be fair, I don't recall any promises, as such. The media are whipping everyone up too much, all nations need to walk through this pandemic, not run, and it really is an ever-changing situation as the data comes through. Personally I do expect more freedoms to come (controlled environments like schools, restaurants etc), but we won't be going back to normal for some time I expect, the social distancing will be for a while yet.

Sadly, the risk is not just for yourself but to those around you, so no, it's not just your choice. At some point though, once we have quick vaccination programmes for everyone who wants one - hopefully later this year - then there'll come a point when we can say if you don't want one then it's your choice, but we're a bit away from that yet.

Keep the spirit, mate, we'll get there.
