The evidence is stacking up against vitamin D supplements and deficiencies with regards covid. Both pre print still.

I'm guessing here, but were they proper tests last week, and now this week the LF tests, which are not very accurate ?
Suppose what we don’t know is how many are positive tests as opposed to kids just having to isolate due to close contact. Could only be a couple of positives? And yes, of course might be down to a false positive with a lateral flow test too.

What utter shite journalism. Would they have been happier if we had to use them FFS???

On a different topic however, a salutary reminder of just how utterly shit our handling of this has been here in the UK:

South Korea: population 51m; average age 43.7; COVID deaths 1,645; Deaths per 1m of population 32

UK: population 68m; average age 40.5; COVID deaths 124,797; Deaths per 1m of population 1,832

We are comparable countries in terms of population size and demographics and just look at the bloody difference! Even compared to western countries, our performance has been abjectly awful. We have the highest death toll per capita of any major country on planet earth. Absolutely woeful performance.

We have put peoples' freedoms and a desire to disrupt peoples' lives, too high up the agenda and as a result we have consistently locked down too late, too lightly, with too little deterent and punishments, and come out of lock downs too soon. And we have done so repeatedly, learning nothing from the previous mistakes. And the results speak for themselves. We score an F for Fail and our only redemption is the speed with which we are (thank God) rolling out the vaccines or else our performance would continue to be bottom of the class.
They were a publicity stunt as there was never the manwomanpower to use them.

Not true, if they had needed to be used then they’d have used, military, students, retired volunteers etc. They weren’t used and we should be thankful for that. We did come worryingly close though and if we had needed them and they weren’t there that would have been far worse.
You don’t buy insurance then be disappointed you didn’t use it.

Surely they couldn’t have contracted it at school though, too quick for positive results. Be interested to hear why this has happened, doesn’t make sense to me.
They had lateral flow tests last week. Might as well toss a coin for reliability.

Apparently the media aren't interested in the progress of the pandemic. A minor family squabble is more important.

Problem is and always has been, as soon as the media start reporting good news - people relax, don’t take the rules seriously and think it’s all over.

this has been mentioned so many times. I wish people would stop calling for the news to report the positive stuff (which in the main they actually do, but cautiously)

That wasn’t how they were sold and when it came down to it any retired staffers struggle to make the bill as they hadn’t done their terrorism training.

Or perhaps the news could report the news, whether that be good or bad. It’s not meant to be propaganda.

is there not a case to be said that the elderly/vulnerable some of who are scared to come out are harmed by constant negativity which you want to be the only thing they hear.

I will say it again, those people who “relax” don’t follow rules etc... are not those closely following the story anyway.

You make a very fair point about us letting our guard down if it's all good news. I'd like to hear more from the health services putting recent success in getting cases under some sort of control into context; our intensive care capacity is still under stress and it'll take a long while to get non-Covid services back where they were.

As @ctwrd just said, it's the lack of balance that's the problem.

I see we now have less cases and a lower average death rate than Germany, which has been the bench mark for major European countries in dealing with covid. Our cases are still dropping albeit at a slower rate and theirs are sadly now rising again. Our death and case rates have both dropped more quickly from much higher points than Germany's. I'm guessing this is mainly due to the success of our vaccination program?

Or the failure of theirs? But given that this is a global pandemic this should be a matter of concern. Vaccines should end this whether it's in one tranche or two (moe likely an upgrade required in the Autumn) but this presupposes they can be delivered and accepted. In France I think roughly 5m have been vaccinated or 8.5 doses per 100,000 (includinh 2nd doses).

I hope that low vaccination rates on the continent reflect supply problems rather than enthusiasm?

Very few people watch 'the news' as in the news on TV. Only 1 in 6 of the country watched the supposed most explosive interview in history on Monday.

I'd imagine nowadays people get most of their news from what they use the most which is social media and that's where the danger lies.

Media reporting negative or positive news is insignificant compared to what's freely available on social media.

I get my news on this forum. esp Covid related. Some remarkable posters in here.

Its up to the individual to be responsible for their own actions.

Much is known about Covid now that we didn't know 12 months ago.

Remember when the WHO were saying this is not a pandemic and it cannot spread from human to human ala the CCP edict some months earlier.

Remember when the WHO said masks were ineffectual.

Remember when the WHO said the air vent systems on aircrafts meant it virtually impossible for the virus to be transmitted between passengers on flights even long haul ones.

if people relax then its up to others to tell them to stay vigilant.

Like all COVID's we will have to learn to live with it for generations to come.

You need a balance , trashing the economy and lives and livelihoods every time we have community transmission is not the way to live a life and be part of an orderly civilisation with the freedoms and social interaction all humans require to live a life.

Was just about to post same, I read this thread every day and take an overview, I do listen to radio but never watch any news on tv.
The stats and details and common sense shown by the vast majority of posters in this thread throughout the world is a credit to Ric and his ban of merry men.

its balanced , not over the top and the younger posters I see are improving all the time in knowledge and sensible input.

As for the match day forum ............ (LOL).

Mate's grandson, 15, tested negative so went to school (Stalybridge) on Monday, had another test, negative, kid sat next to him was positive, sent home and now goes back on the 19th

Brother in Law gets tested twice a week at work, he went in Monday and was informed his Friday previous colleague had tested positive, sent home. Meanwhile my sister (his wife) was taking my Dad to Oldham hospital when she got the call, she's isolating now but could easily be asymptotic and passed to my Dad, he's been vaccinated, sister and BIL haven't.

To anyone who thinks we are out of this please wobble head, there's a reason the lockdown is still on.
