Our vaccine supply has been reduced to deal with that spike. That spike should worry you a little.

Bleach isn’t 100% effective in killing germs on our surfaces but we still use it to kill germs on our surfaces. Nobody ever says the jury is still out when we pick up something off a surface we’ve wiped with bleach and get the shits.

Only one human virus has been eradicated by vaccine. That was smallpox and that was a DNA virus that was genetically stable with no known animal reservoir.

So, if vaccination doesn’t stop you catching it, or passing it on, what’s the point of ‘vaccination passports’, other than yet another way to take away more of our civil liberties?
We are sleepwalking into a completely unrecognisable future so the already powerful can ‘keep us safe’, by becoming more powerful (and a lot wealthier).
The only possible useful thing about vaccination passports is they might just wake some people up to the dangers of living in a ‘show us your health papers’ society.

The total collapse of ‘proper’ work and a move towards a materialistic, social media driven, selfish society has left us open to being divided on everything and not to seek out an alternative view, but to attack anyone we perceive as having a different point of view. To snoop on our neighbours, to report people for seeing their mum and now, willing to accept any small crumb offered in the hope of some sort of ‘new normal‘.
This is no doubt fuelled by the biggest fear induced propaganda drive since Goebbels was alive and well, but it is not healthy and will, along with lost years of life due to lockdowns, be one of the longest lasting legacies of Covid.
 
I do not think anybody is saying the vaccines do not stop you catching Covid or passing it on. Evidence suggests it does both to a degree.

Just that it is not 100% successful and these are NOT the primary purposes - which is mitigating the severity if you catch it and so preventing death in the most vulnerable and illness severe enough to harm productivity or overwhelm the NHS in younger people.

All the evidence so far is that the vaccines do exactly what we hoped they would. Nobody who understood them ever suggested that they were magic and would make Covid disappear.

Covid is here for years. Possibly forever. That is a reality we just now have to accommodate and not pretend it does not matter.

The vaccines will be adapted as we go along and learn more and get better and they are far and away the best way out we have right now. Into normality. But it will not be 100% what the world was before.

A pandemic is not a short lived event that happens and you forget. It is an event that changes the future of the world in many unpredicted ways.

It is why they have long made horror movies about such a thing. The 1918 Spanish Flu outbreak changed medicine in many ways that resonated long afterwards. Some of them were actually because of what medics in Manchester did at that time from which we learned ways to navigate such things.

I fully agree. Vaccine passports are a discriminatory, unethical and divisive abuse of power. They have no place in a democratic society and must be fought tooth and nail.
 
In 1918 when Spanish Flu hit Manchester the Prime Minister (Lloyd George) was taken ill with it after interacting with crowds in Albert Square. He was put into a Nightingale Hospital just yards from where the one today was created. Actually within the Town Hall.

Dr James Niven - the chief medic for the city - was a pioneer of what we now call social distancing as a way to mitigate the spread of a virulent pandemic. He also created plans that recognised the importance of messaging and that pioneered food distribution without risking infection.

As a result of his methods Manchester came through that global nightmare in which one quarter of the entire population of the planet caught the virus and 50 million of them died.

But under his methods only 300 or so did in the city which then had a population of about 100,000 - so a dearh rate well under the average.

He warned against mass public gatherings as these would spread the disease - just as it may well have done to the PM in Albert Square. But the war ended and people demanded to celebrate. They did.

Not long after dozens were dying every day. Manchester still emerged better than most places but he never got over the regret that many died who could have been saved if they had followed his strategy rather than given up too soon and partied.

Might be a few things to ponder here.
 
Of course, another irony is that we call it the Spanish Flu despite it not originating there because they had not been involved in World War One and so openly reported things that much of the world did not during wartime creating an impression that they were the epicentre.

And today we have the 'British variant' around the planet causing havoc so named for not dissimilar reasons - we happened to have the labs that track such things around the world and so noticed it quickly before it became as widespread as now by natural seection.

Can't agree with much of that, mentioning Goebbels was the final straw.

189 cases (there were 391 on Fri/Sat last week)

1,8% positivity - was 2% average of both days last Fri/Sat

Posted a link the other day to events on the ground in Israel; do think it’s prudent to see what is actually happening in countries that are farther down the line.

Governments can fritter away another fortune designing digital passports and agonise over public utility versus individual liberty, but on the ground it’s people who will decide. Come May‘s end when as many adults have had their second dose and as many younger adults have had their first dose, a domestic passport will be rendered obsolete. People won’t ask for it and people won’t use it. That’s what’s already happened in Israel.

International travel, however, will likely require it, though, which is why the U.K. should be calling all countries to follow the WHO and have one internationally recognised system.
 
Wales vaccination update:

1, 490, 372 first doses given - 17, 729 (presumably over last 2 days as this is a running total) - was 11. 763 on last report (Saturday) & was 35, 395 over the same 2 days last week.

467, 683 second doses given - 4238 (presumably over last 2 days as above) - was 3668 on last report (Saturday) & was 16, 119 over the same 2 days last week.

Some pretty low numbers for 2 days here - though Easter weekend will be a factor as well as the notified in advance April reduction in supply.
