Crying shame this report from Politico on the AZ vaccine.

How AstraZeneca became the Marmite of vaccines -- loved by the British, scorned by the rest of the world’

Good article on AZ. Thanks for posting Bob.

The US drug companies will be painted heroes in their own country for making a fortune whilst the third world brews up another slew of variants that will keep the pandemic going and their profits flowing,

And AZ - which too many viewed as a threat to profits rather than a saviour of the poorer nations by doing it at cost - will never attempt such a thing again when the next pandemic arrives.

This uneven fight was a victory for money and greed versus humanity and protection of others which itself is self preserving not altruistic though most people fail to see that.

AZ might be slightly less good than ones produced by mega rich US drug companies aiming to become more mega and richer. But I was very happy to have the chance to have two doses as early as we did in the UK. And proud that we tried to help save the world from this terrible disease but sad the world chose to put money ahead of lives because their lives mattered more than those who struggle to survive every single day in terrible conditions not suffer most because they have to take a few weeks off work playing computer games and subsidised to do so.

Far too much selfishness has occurred within the west that will - in due course - come and bite back.

They should call the next vaccine Pharma Karma. As that is why it will be needed

I did wonder why after the Pfizer vaccine got safety approval a while back for teenagers, the UK didn’t go ahead with a vaccination programme for 13-17 year olds. Not many of them would have been at serious health risk but it would certainly have limited this pingdemic, with parents having to isolate cos one of their teenage kids had been sent home in a bubble.
However I now understand that the supply shortages mean sufficient vaccines for that to happen aren’t due in the UK till early September (late August at best) - so maybe that’s a factor in why this hasn’t happened yet.

By the way - anyone want to hazard a guess as to what the percentage of cases right now are people catching covid for a second time?

answer

about 1 in 200.

Or more accurately testing positive for it after already having had it before.

How lovely and philanthropic of the French: we don’t believe AZ is safe to use but you Africans, here, you have our AZ leftovers.

It’s almost as if the pharmaceutical industry had billions of dollars of lobbying power and AZ’s rivals don’t like a non-profit making vaccine on the market.
