Was out in town last night for a friend's birthday, just 4 of us, and was very uncomfortable. First time I've been out in the centre at night since 2019. Was fine at the little pop up bar we started at as was outside and just a few tables, but as we headed towards the main roads it was pretty much a normal Saturday, with mainly 30 and under hugging, drinking, singing and copping off as you'd expect pre covid.

Seven Brothers in particular was heaving and like sardines. Personally I'm not comfortable with that and so we bypassed it all.

Whilst all of this is now personal choice and I'm not going to judge others individually, I was surprised by the complete lack of consideration for the virus and others, on display. I just don't get that way of thinking, be it conspiracy suspicions or blasé way of life.

My personal choice is that I want to do everything to limit catching or spreading the virus, even if I may get it mild because I'm double jabbed I'd drill rather not have it, and I may pass it on to someone less fortunate.

Town was a mistake, staying clear for the foreseeable.

Human nature, certainly in this country anyway. No one wearing a mask at City yesterday.

Town has been like that for months - pretty much back to normal for ages. I live in Ancoats and have commented a few times that the difference in perception between those that live out in the burbs and those of us in town who are just getting on with life is quite noticeable.

Think I saw 12 people wearing a mask at yesterday’s game.

Must admit I didn't wear a mask whilst watching the game, however, I did wear one whilst entering the stadium, when I popped up to the concourse at half time and at full time when walking down Joe Mercer Way because of the close proximity of so many people.

Sadly haven't a clue.

Hoping it's just a bounce as everything reopens, and settles before too long. Probably got another few weeks of growth before that happens with schools only just back though.

My best guess is just a mixture of everything really. Football matches, nightclubs, increased socialising in general, people taking tests rather than isolating after being named as a close contact probably another factor to consider.

What I'm absolutely certain of is that regardless of what's actually causing it, schools will be getting the full blame of it this time next week.
Schools will add to the problem but we can't let this rule our lives anymore. We have the vaccine that's doing its job, there will be collateral deaths but we have to live with it, it's not my future as I've lived a decent life but as Steve Job's said when he was terminally ill, about death:

"It clears out the old to make way for the new."

None of us want to pop our clogs but it's inevitable and you can only die once!

I ain't going anywhere until city have won 30 league titles..

Not good figures from Scotland today, first clear sign of hospital patients rising after a week or so of huge case number increases

3190 cases up from last week's 1498
10.8% positive up from last week's 7.4%

338 in hospital up 18 from 320 yesterday, 331 last week. Maybe a one off with a bump in these numbers or may be the start of a trend. We'll be able to tell for sure within a week or two I'd guess.

Good twitter thread from maths prof making the same points I've been trying to, but rather better, about why the current figures are a concern.

There is a great deal that puzzles me and troubles me in equal measure:
we are one of the most advanced vaccinated nation in the world yet our infection rate is one of the worst. How come?
our over 50's are pretty much double jabbed yet in Scotland, just last week, 180 people from that age segment were hospitalised. How come?
Dumfries and Galloway is one of the most vaccinated areas of Scotland yet just now it has one of the worst infection rates in Europe. How come?
If anyone has the answer please tell me because I am really starting to feel uneasy about the level of protection the vaccination programme is giving us. And I know that being vaccinated is supposed to cut your chance of infection by approx 70% and then even if you are infected the symptoms are reduced and the chances of hospitalisation or death are almost eliminated. You can pass on the virus if you have been vaccinated and subsequently are infected. That is what we are being told.

I can't answer any of your questions unfortunately but it does seem strange. I would have thought your numbers would be much lower by now given your effective vaccination program.

In contrast, we have a much lower vaccination rate, yet our numbers have stayed pretty low and stable for a few months now. Despite 97% of cases being Delta, numbers never really took off here in the same way and have stayed more or less between 150 and 250 per day for quite some time.

I have been expecting us to get the same sort of steep rises as in the UK but they just haven't materialised yet. Maybe we've still got it to come but it does puzzle me why it hasn't already happened.

Is your testing the same kind of frequency? You are in Czechoslovakia aren’t you? It escapes me why the U.K. has these wild swings. Obviously the last one coincides with ‘freedom’ day (ha). But why isn’t the same pattern replicated elsewhere?

Are there restrictions and compulsory mask wearing where you are KnaresboroughBlue? The UK have dropped all restrictions and if there are still some restrictions where you are, that may be the difference perhaps? I hoped that the uk cases and hospitalisations would be lower as the summer wore on, but it seems as though the daily numbers are staying pretty flat and not reducing, possibly even starting to increase slightly here.

Have a lot of testing here. Not quite as much as the UK but one of the highest per population.
