I agree with the comments above. He's never let City down when he's stepped in and an international needs first team football, especially at his age. Any thoughts on his replacement? Do we get a younger player in or someone with a bit of experience who doesn't mind playing second fiddle to JH?
I notice that the piece in the Sun on Panto leaving mentioned that Joe has struggled. I think he's made one or two errors this season but we've still got the best defensive record in the league (31 against). Oddly, the gooners (another team who's defense has been pilloried in the press) are only on 36 against which is the second best in the league.
What?? Pantilimon has "never let us down"?
As mentioned earlier, he's made cock ups in virtually every game he's played for us FFS.
Why pretend that this hasn't happened? Seriously, what's the point?
I'll explain myself; Of course ALL players (yes, including goalkeepers and especially including modern day goalkeepers) make cock-ups. I can't recall Panti costing us a game from an individual error in any of his 11 appearances for the club. Of his 11 appearances, he's kept 6 clean sheets and conceded 12 goals in the 5 matches in which his goal has been breached.
Of these, four were conceded against Villa in the League Cup, one of which was an own goal by Barry, three were against United in the FA Cup (and I think one of these was a saved penalty where a rebound was scored) and two were against Chelsea in the Community Shield. I admit, conceding 9 in three games is a bit of a disaster. Now, I haven't checked, but I'm guessing that in most of the games Panti has played in, the defenders were probably doing one of their keystone cops impressions which tends to happen when the second stringers are let loose. I doubt Panti can be held accountable for ALL of the goals he's conceded. But, being the man that I am, I'll admit that I have not seen every minute of every game in which he's played.
Clearly though, any "cock ups" made in the 6 games he's played where he hasn't conceded a goal have not led to a goal.
It's unfortunate for goalkeepers that if they do make a bad mistake, this usually ends up costing the team a goal.
The point, since you ask, is NOT pretending that he has never made a mistake. The point I was making was that I was agreeing with some of the other contributors who also believe he's a fairly decent goalkeeper. Having only been given 4 appearances last season and 7 appearances this season, I'd probably be right in suggesting that the jury would have to be out on him anyway unless he was given an extended run in the side.
Incidentally, to others who have posted about him wanting to leave the club well, who can blame the guy if all he wants to do is play football and his international manager is rightly telling him that he needs to play. I haven't seen anyone mention that in the article in The Sun (which is the one I read) that he also stated he wanted to stay at the club, likes the club and wouldn't mind going out on loan.
Hopefully Mancini is a man of his word and will start with him though I admit that I think Hart is the better goalkeeper and given that the outfield team will be full strength, some of those players might not be used to playing with Panti behind them. The right thing to do is to field your best possible side and that would, for me, include Hart. Note that I also have not lambasted Hart and have pointed out that we have the best defensive record in the league! I do think Hart has a way to go to prove he's the best and he has not been quite as solid as he was last season but I felt he was exceptional last season. He's at an age now where he is about to come into his prime. We can expect superhuman performances over then next 5 or so years.
