Could you/would you take in refugees

How is that going to work by Friday - do I have to make direct contact?

I assumed that the Government website would be putting up the make-up of families - e.g. mum, dad 2 kids etc and then people could state what they could accommodate
There won’t be many dads, they were refused exit by Ukraine and they were forced to stay and fight. There are going to be many of the families in a right state if they have to be told their father/ husband has been killed in action. They will need a lot of counselling.

Actually the government website says they will match but Sky said earlier it would be down to us maybe with help of charities

What a calm sensible post. I cannot put an argument together against any points you make. Unfortunately it’s just not something me and the wife want to do for a multitude of reasons. One other poster said earlier that, rightly or wrongly the vast majority will think like me. Those that say I would like to help but can’t, fair enough, but nobody has followed it up by saying I will give x% of my income to help out instead By volunteering some one else’s property instead is a cop out. That’s not helping them out, that’s telling some one else to do it. Most if not everyone feels a great deal of sympathy for the refugees who wouldn’t . In the real world however, when those who genuinely want to help and I am sure they will make every effort, when it comes to heh lads heh will, on careful reflection say I would like to, but... It’s a hell of an unlimited commitment which very few in the real world will be able to handle. I just hope there is a thread started on here about those that do and how they are coping and..... I am still around to see it. If there are more than 3-4 I will be very surprised.
Yeah, that's a fair response. I agree the actual number of bluemooners welcoming refugees would be quite low.

I think it's important that the refugees who are housed here are brought into a warm and welcoming environment and it literally isn't possible for most people to offer that. You need physical space available as well as a certain temperament to 'put up' with a person(s) who will be very different culturally and possibly struggling with their mental health (understandably).

I really would like to offer my spare room to a refugee, but I'm expecting my first child in 6 weeks and I don't think myself or my wife would feel particularly comfortable with a 'stranger' in our home during some of the most overwhelming months of our lives. I don't earn terrible money, but with upcoming family-related expenses, I'm not willing to donate significant sums to support charities. I would happily offer some time (until the baby is born), but I'm not sure how to go about that. I think it's important to show little signs of solidarity too. I'm thinking about learning Ukrainian on Duolingo (I love learning languages anyway - close to finishing my current course). I will attend vigils in Manchester. If I'm lucky enough to bump into a refugee I'll be kind, polite, helpful. I've helped organise pro-Ukrainian displays at City.

Other than that, I can't really help. So I wouldn't call out anyone else who isn't.

If everyone who talked a good game took in a refugee or a family, there's no reason why we couldn't facilitate millions of refugees.

Right government stop fucking around and get this website up and running. Announcement due today at 4:15pm by Gove. Apparently Sky saying we can register interest from today but have to name Ukrainian’s we want by Friday. What a fucking shambles that is just find me a family or whatever that needs a roof over their heads and send them my way. I’ll pay for their flights and pick them up from the airport.
You have a great attitude.

The truth it the gov are passing the buck to us rather than take responsibilty and house these poor people in the many empty homes , second houses , their own included, holiday homes , butlins, state buildings and places like that , typical tories taking the piss out of the people again , no shame

Those with family and friends might not be able to welcome them in depending on their circumstances , also the six months minimum is a real unachievable request , anything might happen

Add to the fact they are making visas slow to get and tight criteria is all designed to keep numbers down which is the aim here

Technically it's not the governments responsibility. All they can do is organise and act as a conduit to the population and let the interested/able parties take up the slack. They have dragged their heels over it though. Your average government can't run a bath unaided.

The 20/30 London-based Russian-owned mansions that are involved in the sanctions should be offered up. Poetic justice.

Any MPs second house too.

Straight away there's got to be 150+ homes?
