Always nine in the UK version looking at the first episode broadcast, although the original version it was based on in France started with 7 and ended with 10. Unless he means it was going to be 8 but they changed it after piloting the format or something. BTW the French version has just finished after a 50+ year run over there.As Colin Murray asked on The Rest is Entertainment podcast, why is it called countdown and not count up?
They even went on to say that originally there were only 8 letters, so it’s just a coincidence that it has 9 letters.
