Coverage on Radio Manchester

Most of the callers are off their rockers. I try and listen but it's normally switched to Smooth before I hit the Mancunian Way.

I remember they had someone ring in who slagged off Mangala. When asked if he'd been at the game, he replied he hadn't nor had he watched it. He was just going off comments he'd heard on the radio.

My favourite part of that call was when he said "I don't know the stats, but every time Mangala plays with Kompany we go to pieces at the back."

The stats are that Kompany and Mangala have played 5 times together this season and we have conceded 0 goals.

Jimmy Wagg spends more time asking people to phone in than the time spent by the ones that actually do!!!

Fred Eyre.. FFS!!!! The guy would send a glass eye to sleep!! But the most annoying thing about GMR is Fred Eyre, Cheesy, Lakey, The Goat etc etc's reluctance to say anything ever so negative about certain players when its plainly obvious that they're nowhere near good enough. I do think big brother(i.e City) is watching their every move, especially with players doing various jobs at the club. Do love Blue Tuesday though, Cheesy does a fine job with that one. P.S I do have a wry smile when we get guests from Stockport on, which seems like every other week! . Come on Cheesy, lets have a Moston, Blackley,Failsworth,Monsall,Newton Heath etc connection for a change. CTID.

I've heard all sorts on there over the years. I heard a guy saying "The second goal was definitely offside" who hadn't been to the match. One of the best was an opinionated (now banned) poster from here almost blowing a gasket every time he rang, to barely-concealed mirth in the studio. You know who I mean...

To suggest that they are somehow "downgrading" City coverage is of course nonsense, as 75% of their sports content has always been City. They might be trying to increase their listeners from other clubs in the region who's fans no doubt see them as utterly City biased, because they are, and I love it. Wagg, Cheeseman, Eyre etc are the voice of City's traditional soul and a link to "Old" City which I hope never goes away. I'd be disappointed with City if they didn't recognise this historical link and started doing a Man United and flogging off audio rights at prohibitive prices.

GMR were at York Away, and everywhere else.

The problem with Radio Manchester is they actually encourage the wankers to phone in. They should tell the clueless twats to fuck off, just before cutting them off. Instead they let them drone on and on. Bring back James H Reeve!

Radio Manchester is the most biased pro-City media source in the entire world. I wish they wouldn't put little kids on the phone in, but they generally make as much sense as the lemons who phone in with their comedy opinions.

You have to love GMR.
Genuine question – why do they never cover the rags? Was there some contractual thing years ago that stopped them doing it?

Got to love Wagg and Cheesman! Is there a bit of Alan Partridge in there?

They used to but United changed the way they sold their commentary rights and GMR backed out. I can't remember the exact details but that's what happened, maybe about 10 years ago. But even before that, when they covered both clubs, the perception was that Radio Manchester favoured City and Picadilly favoured United. I'm sure it wouldn't be editorial policy, more a reflection of the people in the studio.

I remember Piccadilly covering the rags. Put me off that particular station for good.

Now the OP points it out, I have noticed this listening to RM after the game. After the last match, they were mainly talking about Bolton's problems when we were listening on the way home, plus a bit on Rochdale. I've also posted before about the BBC's general attitude to City, which seems to mirror the Sky approach of belittling or ignoring us.

Could be, as DD says, that they're looking to widen their listener base and that we get enough national coverage as it is. Maybe there's a problem between the club and BBC RM.

I rely on GMR for coverage of non-televised away games I don't go to so as long as they carry on with that then I'll listen to them.
