COVID-19 — Coronavirus

My mate (25yrs) was denied a test on Friday, he’s had all of the symptoms for the past 10 days and has been coughing up blood. He’s been denied a test and told to self isolate.

I don’t know exactly what’s going on but it’s obvious the current figures are skewed, Boris himself said last week he thinks there could be 10,000 infected at a time the U.K. officially ‘only’ had about 400.

I’ve been in direct contact with him as we shared a snooker cue last week and sat together at Wembley (not knowing how he’d been). I work for the emergency services and rang 111 for advice as advised by my boss. I was told only to self isolate if I have symptoms or have been in direct contact with a confirmed case. How can I know if he’s a confirmed case if they won’t test him?

Apologies - just saw the last paragraph you added. I agree that it's a bit annoying trying to suss if you've been in direct contact with a definite carrier or not. I can only add that they simply don't have the resources to test us all.

As an aside, places like Wembley were a breeding ground for this - not just being sat in the stadium itself, but going for a piss at half-time, mixing in the pubs before and after, travelling on the tube before and after, etc. I actually can't believe that that game was only 15 days ago, given how everything has escalated so much since. In that 7 days from March 1st, I went to Wembley, Hillsborough, and Old Trafford, so fuck knows how many people I could've come into contact with who had it, and of course how many people I could've passed it on to if I (unknowingly) had it. Since then I've knocked all unnecessary contact on the head which means sacking off the pub, going out for meals, etc. Honestly, I feel like this is a script right out of the most far-fetched of horror stories.

Are people assuming they have the virus considering they are not being tested? There seems to be a lot of slebs announcing they have it and if we take that as an indication are they guessing too? I ask this because I only thought they tested the hospitalised.

Not so sure myself, as a lot of people just don't have the ability to interpret simple data let alone complex analysis, and it tends to be the loudest voices that get heard not the most intelligent. That's not safe in this day and age.
That was among the concerns I acknowledged, but it would likely only be a very small number of people with data science (like me) and/or scientific research backgrounds that would even be able to do anything with the models, so I think the overall “bad” impact would be lower than the overall “good” impact.

Just my opinion, of course, and I don’t think they will be doing it any time soon, anyway, for the reasons we have discussed.
