According to Public Health England, COVID-19 poses the biggest threat to those who have weaker immune systems and long-term - or chronic - illnesses.

Some of the chronic conditions said to heighten the risk among patients are:

  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • Cancer
Ireland's health services have also released a list of conditions that weaken the immune system, and include:

  • Patients undergoing treatments for cancer
  • Patients undergoing treatments for autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, multiple sclerosis (MS) and inflammatory bowel diseases
  • Patients with HIV
  • Anyone who has had organ or bone marrow transplants
Asthma sufferers are also thought to be at a greater risk of being worse affected by the virus, which causes an infection in the respiratory tract.

That’s why I’m worried about my Mam because she has Lupus.

Just seen a load of half wits drinking outside a closed bar in Benidorm, singing. One said, " It's just the flu, have a beer!" before the police forced them back to their hotel. If this virus culls plenty of these morons it will be a result.

We had two off today but pupil-wise, very ,mixed, one class had 8 pupils absent, others none. I can tell you 95% of our Polish parents have made the decision themselves and won't be sending their children in. Since this started we have had one email from the Local Authority. We don't know if we're still legally liable for the welfare of the children if the school closes - we're not in the holidays but this is completely unchartered territory. We've drawn up a list of our most vulnerable pupils (those on child protection plans; those with severe medical needs) and we may have senior staff checking on them but, again, does that go against the gov.advice? There are some very, very vulnerable kids/families and we cannot let them slip through the net on this. We also have 73% on Free School Meals. No information on what happens there. The idea that folk will stay away from pubs/clubs is fanciful. It needs putting in law. This isn't the time to prevaricate; it's time for decisive action.

I taught three periods today, 8, 7 and 5 kids absent.

This announcement is going to see that figure rise.

The friends of an 88-year-old church choir singer who died after contracting coronavirus say he got the illness at a restaurant after coming into contact with a skier returning from Italy.

Darrell Blakeley, from Middleton, Greater Manchester, died on Friday at North Manchester General Hospital after contracting COVID-19.

He was admitted to hospital on 3 March with sepsis, but was placed in quarantine having earlier had contact in a restaurant with "a skier who had returned from Italy," a statement from his local church said.

It added that he initially tested negative for the virus, but a week later received a positive result, shortly before becoming "extremely poorly and died".
