COVID-19 — Coronavirus

I’m totally on the theory, protect the vulnerable and elderly, let the rest mostly catch and survive, build up immunity and rush through vaccines, whilst saving whatever last bits of economy we have.
1 person dies to acquire immunity for 100 people. It seems unnecessary to me when we have an advanced society which is generating solutions. If the USA was armed with the tests and vigilance that is now has, it's highly unlikely they'd get infected again. Likewise the UK now armed with test kits that can identify antigen and antibody in minutes.

We're dragging this out at what will be a harrowing cost for some families. It will be put down as an act of God but this is our government's choice to take this route. When they debate these tactics at Cobra they have all the options in front of them. They can take them all. They have chosen the half-way house.

But top up what if the employee is receiving the same amount in cash?

At it stands, they are not. The 80% will be subject to the normal deductions because these companies are paying out before claiming through the scheme. Net pay will be less.

I may well be misunderstanding your point mate.

Until the detail of the scheme is communicated across the industries and big PLCs the end result isn’t clear.

Germany reporting a significant drop in the number of new cases today, I think: 4,332 to 1,286.

They were just the early figures though. Germany drip feed them through the day. They are now on over 6,000 cases today (roughly the same as Spain and an increase of 2,000 on yesterday).

Could just be doing more testing though I guess.

So the Govt are giving you 80p in the £1 but then taxing you on that? So they’re not really giving you 80%?

Yep some people and businesses are not coming out of this crisis well, big ones i mean, not small companies

Corporate greed and bullying in a time of crisis. On the face of it, and I may be wrong, that’s how it looks.

The line from the big PLCs is we are safeguarding jobs and long term security of the companies.

I personally disagree.

I think it’s a move designed to ensure there is as little expenditure as possible vs cash loss as a consequence of this virus.

As is see it, people and human beings don’t matter across many sectors of our industry.

Yes and no.

Whether the government tax on the 80% will only be clear when this scheme and its cash land in the banks of those claiming. At which point there should be a rebate at the end of the next tax year.

At the moment, the bigger companies are taxing this 80% because they haven’t yet had the cash and the scheme and its detail isn’t clear enough.

80% net is more than 100% gross at the top end £37,500 paying £30,000. The only grey area is if employer NI is paid as well as the employee IC and NI.

Vacines wont be available to the general public till feb 2020 - IF THE VIRUS DOESN'T MUTATE IN THE MEAN TIME.
Anybody betting solely on a vacine being a available is stupid. Of more importance to the public health system is identifying those who have antibodies and taking their blood and extracting the plasma and injecting it into those who are seriously ill. That can be done within two months of the antibody test being rolled out possibly sooner if people pull their finger out.
A vaccine was rushed through in 2009 to combat swine flu. The majority of doctors and nurses ignored it, it just wasn’t considered to be effective. And that was before it turned out that swine flu wasn’t as serious as feared. There was subsequently a huge upturn in cases of narcolepsy, which might not be the most serious side effect (at least that was the argument put forward by the government when trying to fight compensation claims), but is hugely debilitating. And who knows what random side effect might turn up this time.

The tax payer will pay regardless. Giving away 20% of the country’s GDP isn’t for nothing.

Rebated or not, tax is going up when this is all done.
