I don’t think any governments or media can be accused to keeping a lid on it, there is plenty of panic around.

better we are over cautious than under I suppose.

you can still buy bog rolls but hand sanitiser , that ship has sailed.

loads of hand sanitiser in my local Aldi.
I can get you some.
£10 a small bottle...

Best case scenario: a heaven-sent comforter for Bremoaners. 2019/20 PL title declared null and void. Industry and commerce learn how to replace unnecessary commuting and business travel by deploying existing technologies.

Mid-case scenario: 1% to 2% mortality rate. Windfall for manufacturers of anti-bacterial soap and generic paracetamol.Turbulent stock markets.

Worst case scenario: survival-of-the fittest cull in response to world over-population and climate change. Stock markets fcuked in the arse and pension schemes collapse.

It can't be worse than the plagues at the swamp and I've already survived that shithole once this year. Hope to survive again on Sunday.

A very interesting account of the experience of someone in the current quarantine lockdown in China.

WHO have just released a statement saying 3.4% mortality rate unless I’ve misread which ratio we are talking about - that’s quite a bit higher than I expected.good news is on transmission rates - it doesn’t seem to spread as easily as flu....um I’m confused.com with that comment based on previous observations on the transmission rates!

GENEVA (Reuters) – About 3.4% of confirmed cases of COVID-19 have died, far above seasonal flu’s fatality rate of under 1%, but the novel coronavirus can be contained, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Tuesday.

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a Geneva news conference: “To summarize, COVID-19 spreads less efficiently than flu, transmission does not appear to be driven by people who are not sick, it causes more severe illness than flu, there are not yet any vaccines or therapeutics, and it can be contained.”

Separate yourself from other people and animals in your home
People: As much as possible, you should stay in a specific room and away from other people in your home. Also, you should use a separate bathroom, if available.

Animals: You should restrict contact with pets and other animals while you are sick with COVID-19, just like you would around other people. Although there have not been reports of pets or other animals becoming sick with COVID-19, it is still recommended that people sick with COVID-19 limit contact with animals until more information is known about the virus. When possible, have another member of your household care for your animals while you are sick. If you are sick with COVID-19, avoid contact with your pet, including petting, snuggling, being kissed or licked, and sharing food. If you must care for your pet or be around animals while you are sick, wash your hands before and after you interact with pets and wear a facemask. See COVID-19 and Animals for more information.

We’ve got two kittens that are obsessed with me and the Mrs, they come into whatever room we go into and sit on us.

Hopefully it’s out of the way enough where I live to avoid it. I can also work from home.

That is the CFR, so will likely be higher than the ‘actual’ mortality rate, but I agree it is interesting even so, and the lower transmission rate is a surprising assertion. I wonder if that is down to initial precautions and the overall global growth rate declining due to relative containment in China (since it is the main contributor at this point) and if that will actually last as things progress.

The biggest takeaway from that for me is that “transmission does not appear to be driven by people who are not sick”, which is in conflict with a lot of findings/guidance released previously by the WHO, CDC, and a few other major research entities. I hope that holds to be true, as it will significantly limit transmission.
