Why are comparing with spain at all? We govern by consent here and we had to be asked very politely at the start and not told,we will never have a harder lockdown

So do Spain, I wasn’t comparing, the prediction was made we’d have vastly more deaths than Spain because we haven’t had the strict lockdown they have. I’m just pointing out having less restrictions hasn’t so far pushed up our critical care cases above Spain so there is no reason to think we would have vastly more deaths.
As I say though that’s at the moment, when evidence says the current restrictions aren’t keeping critical care cases down thats’s when we will increase measures, or vice versa. It will be evidence led and it will be critical care / hospitalisation evidence.

Two more weeks of daily death rises according to Vallance. We're already had more than Spain has had on any single day. If it keeps rising, like they said today, we'll have 1k+ a day for a while (which will make Italy/Spain's daily death totals look small), then we've got to come back down the other side of the curve, and that will be several hundreds for some time. We've got a soft lockdown, nothing close to the intensity Spain has got. There's no way we'll match their numbers.

Doesn't make sense that if we have a soft lockdown and we're already matching the numbers of those countries with intense lockdowns that we won't have a lot more deaths.

Believe me a policeman tells you to do something in Spain you do it. Here we have allowed people to lose respect for the Police.

If he needed hospitalisation or critical care though he’d have been admitted and would show in those figures.

I thought you were making a comparison between UK cases and Spanish cases?

If you don't think deaths are a good yardstick then I don't think you can say that overall cases are when you consider the difference in the number of tests each country is carrying out and the difference in criteria. Especially so when you throw Italy, Germany and other countries into the mix.

I'd say deaths are the best albeit flawed means of comparing our situation with other countries along with numbers in critical care.

Depends where you start the curve comparison from. 10 deaths, 20 deaths or 50 deaths.
10 deaths then we're ahead, 20 deaths we're level and 50 deaths we're behind.

I presume you're talking about Spain? As for Italy, I guess we'll be on a steeper curve than them no matter where the curve starts if we're not already there.

Another 765 patients have died in England after contracting coronavirus - bringing the total to 7,248

In Scotland, the number of people with coronavirus who have died rose by 81 on Thursday taking the total to 447, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said.

Wales has reported another 41 deaths, taking the total there to 286.

And in Northern Ireland a further four people have died, meaning the total rises to 82

What we dont have is the breakdown of ages and fit/underlying conditions which is strange

I can’t see much changing anytime soon, regardless of the fatality rate, sadly. People complain when the police do too much and also complain when they do too little.

In East London they have decided to open the large park near me from Saturday. Not sure what idiotic negligent person decided that, but it's a recipe for disaster. They have left a list of strong guidlines

Reduced opening hours from 8am to 4pm, daily
Only exercise outdoors once a day - such as a run or walk, alone or with other people from your household
Leisure cycling is only allowed for children under the age of 12 who are accompanied by an adult
Exercise = keep moving → get home, stay at home
No gatherings, sunbathing, picnics or sport games
Stay two metres away from other visitors at all times
Use of playgrounds, toilets, gym equipment and benches is prohibited
Give way to people exiting the park
Keep left on pathways and avoid narrow ones
Keep dogs on a lead and on the grass, where possible
Treat staff, police and others with respect
Anyone who enters Victoria Park when it is locked does so at their own risk

At what point does it just become pointless to open it at all?

Not too sure what people think a strict full lockdown will achieve. This virus is going nowhere regardless and if they can keep the numbers down so that the hospitals are not maxed out then that’s what they aim to do. This is clearly working, no hospitals are at capacity and we are in good shape in that respect.

In 3 weeks time all the temporary hospitals will be ready, I’m presuming we will have thousands more ventilators and better testing.

My guess is we will then do what Austria has done and start to open shops and cafes with sensible distancing. People will still get it, but those who get seriously ill will be able to be treated in a hospital giving them the best chance to survive.
