Seoul closes down bars and clubs in wake of Itaewon cluster The Seoul city government on Saturday ordered clubs and bars to shut after a spate of infections in the city's popular Itaewon entertainment district, official media reported.
Nightlife establishments across the South Korean capital will be banned from hosting crowds of people, the Yonhap news agency reported. “Such facilities have to suspend business immediately and will face strict punishment if they breach [the order],” Seoul mayor Park Won-soon was quoted as saying, adding the order will remain in effect until further notice.
Earlier, at least 18 Covid-19 cases associated with a person who visited clubs and bars in Itaewon last weekend have been confirmed, Yonhap reported. South Korean health officials are racing to identify and test more than 1,500 people who also visited Itaewon nightspots last week and might test positive.
