COVID-19 — Coronavirus

A drive-through coronavirus test site has opened in Wolverhampton to allow members of the public to check if they have the disease.

The NHS in England is set to "ramp up" facilities nationwide so 10,000 tests can be done each day

The number of people with the coronavirus in the UK has risen to 456 after a further 83 tested positive for the disease in the last 24 hours.

The number is the biggest daily increase in coronavirus cases in the UK, where six people have died from the illness.

There were 54 new cases recorded in the 24 hours leading up to 9am on Tuesday, and 46 new cases were identified in the 24 hours up to 9am on Monday.

The daily figures have been released by Public Health England

A study has found people who have contracted the coronavirus are at their most contagious early after becoming infected and potentially before displaying symptoms.

Scientists in Berlin and Munich conducted the study, which is still awaiting peer review, by analysing clinical data from patients who have been diagnosed with COVID-19 and checking them with throat swabs.

Oh, I see! Sorry for being slow!

Not quite so great then. But nevertheless, the daily increases seem to be less (% wise) than 4 or 5 days ago, which is perhaps superficially grounds for some encouragement.
Being reported that were upping the tests to 10000 a day from 1500

hope that 19% figure comes down or were in trouble

The Worldometer site is picking up data from official and unofficial sources it seems and this makes it tricky for some analysis. I'm going into the sources of their data and avoiding media websites for the tracking I am casually doing.

There's some good reading on this site which explains a lot about the dangers of reading too much into some of the patterns.

Yeah im starting to just look at the WHO daily updates and going from there but they seem out of sync with our updates so sometimes are a day out.

why so fixated on Cheltenham ?

there will be hundreds of thousands in and out of shopping centres today
hundreds of thousand on and off trains/tubes ...
People need to eat and buy supplies, they do not *need* to collect together in mass numbers for several hours in the name of fun. A certain amount of risk is necessary and acceptable. I'm aware that people rely on income from these events too, but what's more important, money or life?
I'll answer that for you, life!

EDIT:
Our very own Karen7 and Worsleyweb *may* both have Covid19 after sitting next to each other for presumably 2 hours at Wembley. Hope they both get well asap.

How many more people may have or may be affected I wonder.

This isn’t a conspiracy theory, this is just me thinking about our rotten luck and Covid-19 and football.

I’d bet any money you like that Liverpool play at home tonight in front of their fans with all the advantages that brings and our game next week is behind closed door, losing our advantage.

They should just him off the CL if it isn’t a level playing field.

Exactly mate. All sporting events should be suspended in my opinion, but what the fuck do I know.

Why would chippy pick an average death rate or a lower one when he can pick the worst !?
I chose it because there's a lot of data, and for the reasons SWP gave. I just wanted to illustrate the thinking and the maths.

If you want to take South Korea as a potentially less concerning example (actually the best case example) then they have a death rate of only 0.7%, but they have done 5x as many tests as Italy (and nearly 10x the number we have done), so the "ah but there will be a load of sick people who haven't been tested" argument does not wash in South Korea. Now it may be that the death rate overall across the globe after this has all died down, setties at only around 0.7%. That would be fantastic, but it's still 7x worse than flu. And if 40m people in the UK get infected, which is a projection compatible with plenty of sources and authorites, then that's 280,000 dead. You will remember I was suggesting 100,000 and yet am accused of scaremongering and being unduly pessimistic. If we managed to keep it down to 10m infected and 70,000 dead then that would be a major achievement. I hope we can.
