As soon as I said I knew kaz and she had it I was straight on the test. Bored out of my head.

I hopefully don’t have it and just have a bit of the flu. But I’ve actually been off work quite ill this week. coughing ,sore throat and high temperature, in particular. I was at Wembley aswell

I tried the 111 number, but it just redirects you to a questionnaire and says if you haven’t been to the effected areas we won’t test you. I bet there are thousands with it.

I remember in January, in particular, there was a really bad flu outbreak, seemed to effect a lot

A lot of people are just panicking, but there isn’t much information or guidance anywhere

I've never heard that, every time I've been in a hospital over here there are always signs saying that nobody will be refused treatment for financial reasons. You might not get a hip surgery or other such treatment but you'll definately get treated. My sister in law had a heart scare about a year ago, she was life flighted about 90 miles, spent the night in hospital, wracked up about $125k in bills. She had insurance but so much wasn't covered she would still have owed a ridiculous amount, long story short, the hospital just wrote it off, she ended up oeing about $5k
That write-off outcome is not common, mate, and even that situation most often requires quite a lot of time, effort and, ironically, money to make happen, as the individual must fight the care provider and/or the insurance company to reduce or write off the charges entirely. And even in those “successful” situations it can have a significant financial impact on the person that received care. Especially when you consider that many people have to undertake that effort with multiple entities over multiple instances of care (it’s not just a one time event). It can be the equivalent of a full-time job to manage.

For the vast majority in the US seeking care is not only a health consideration but a financial decision, and for the majority of those people, it is a very, very important financial decision, as even minor incidents of care can lead to relatively significant bills and the sort of situation you describe. That is especially true as many people have what are referred to as “catastrophic” insurance coverage plans that only prevent the person from being responsible for *all* costs in the event of a health emergency — they barely cover any normal, preventive care costs and often still lead to financial ruin when more serious issues arise requiring medical care, even with the cost responsibility caps.

In is not uncommon for people in the US to put off seeking medical care entirely because, even with insurance, they cannot afford the cost of care due to high deductibles, co-insurance, and co-payments. For the vast majority of the US even low co-insurance/co-payment fees for care for insured procedures or medical visits are prohibitive due to their not being able to make ends meet aside from medical care.

There is very pronounced healthcare access problem in the US that does not exist in most other developed nations in the world and it will be a very negative factor in mitigating this current viral outbreak.

Here are some fairly good reviews of the significant problems with US healthcare access (as well as the problems with the healthcare system itself):

Just got this sent to me from a mate. I can't verify it but there would appear at least to be some good advice in here. To me, it does sound plausible but i'm not medically trained. I was in two minds whether to post it but feel it may have some advice that can help people at the very least.

From a member of the Stanford Hospital Board. This is their feedback for now on COVID-19.

The new Coronavirus may not show signs of infection for many days. How can one know if he/ she is infected? By the time they have fever and/or a cough and go to the hospital, the lung is usually 50% infected Fibrosis which is extremely concerning.

Taiwan experts provide a simple self-check that we can do every morning. Take a deep breath and hold your your breath for more than 10 seconds. If you complete it successfully without coughing, without discomfort, stiffness or tightness, etc., it proves there is no Fibrosis in the lungs, basically indicates no infection.

Serious excellent advice by Japanese doctors treating COVID-19 cases: Everyone should ensure your mouth and throat are moist, never dry. Take a few sips of water every 15 minutes at least. Why? Even if the virus gets into your mouth, drinking water or liquids will wash them down your throat and into the stomach. Once there, your stomach acid will kill all of the virus. If you don't drink enough water more regularly, the virus can enter your windpipe and into the lungs. This is very dangerous.

1. If you have a runny nose and sputumm, you have a common cold.
2. Coronavirus pneumonia is a dry cough with no runny nose.
3. This new virus is not heat-resistant and will be killed by a temperature of just 26/27 degrees
4. If someone sneezes with it, it takes about 10 feet before it drops to the ground and is no longer airborne.
5. If it drops on a metal surface it will live for at least 12 hours - so if you come into contact with any metal surface - wash your hands as soon as you can with anti-bacterial soap.
6. On fabric, it can survive for 6-12 hours Normal laundry detergent will kill it.
7. Drinking warm water is effective for all viruses. Try not to drink liquids with ice.
8. Wash your hands frequently as the virus can only live on your hands for 5-10 minutes, but - a lot can happen during that time - you can rub your eyes, pick your nose unwittingly and so on.
9. You should also gargle as a prevention. A simple solution of salt in warm water will suffice.
10. Can't emphasis enough - drink plenty of water!

The Symptoms (for worst case scenarious)

1. It will first infect the throat, so you'll have a sore throat lasting 3/4 days.
2. The virus then blends into a nasal fluid that enters the trachea and then the lungs, causing pneumonia. This takes about 5/6 days further.
3. With the pneumonia comes high fever and difficulty in breathing.
4. The nasal congestion is not like the normal kind. You feel like you're drowning. It's imperative that you seek immediate attention.

Italy death toll jumps alarmingly again.
I'd say also the case toll, the new death toll hasn't been that different from yesterday's while the case toll has gone from the 530 new cases of yesterday to the more than 2000 new cases of today.

Just been to Sainsbury's.

Bloke at self service checkout in face mask and wearing surgical.gloves buying 20+ bottles of water.

So Spanish league have forced league games to be played behind closed doors for a fortnight and Madrid is in virtual lockdown and cases rising rapidly in Spain

meanwhile in Liverpool thousands of athletico Madrid fans drinking in the bars of Liverpool.

it does actually seem like we have no plan.

Sounds great.

It's fucking absurd. Madrid is in lock-down yet we allow flights from there into the country, it beggers belief!!
