this one has already mutated once into something worse but looks to have been contained in China.
If that's true, maybe the strain in Italy has mutated as they seem to be suffering far worse than other countries

I think the difference in stance has nothing to do with the leadership but rather the consideration of the science as presented and an appreciation of timescale. This isn't over in 12 weeks, we might have control of it by then, i.e. turned the tide. This is here until we have a vaccine, an effective treatment and some measure of herd immunity. Until then we are very much balancing supply and demand of health system and that includes most importantly health workers. Hence not closing schools completely but turning them into daycare for health workers children and as a by product those others who will benefit from being cared for.
A quick look at the UK news re. supermarkets and social distancing from the outside and comparing it to behaviour in some(but not all) other countries can only lead to the conclusion that the UK population in general (but not all) will not be able to adjust well to 3 months behind closed doors followed by another three when the second wave starts.
If the UK population were all automatons then full lockdown on day 1 would be viable. They are not thank god, they are liberal and free thinking and experimental and adventurous. That's why they lead the world in so many fields from the arts to science to social justice. These are the benefits of the UK. But with those benefits come disadvantages. It's a balancing act and despite the general tone on bluemoon, the latest polls show that the majority of the UK believe the government is handling it well. In a liberal society the government needs the support of the nation.
Exploding Kittens: NSFW Edition! Though that might be more suited for @aguero93:20.Tell her to **** off and come back with a real board game.
I mean, at least Carcassonne or Settlers, FFS.
Pandemic would be the most useful, though. ;-)
The UK mortality rate was discussed in this afternoon's briefing - circa 14:20 in but the whole thing should be watched by those on here with glib criticisms
Think you need to re read this kaz you'll send the place into a frenzy8-).Seriously though, what about having sex if you have the virus or even don't have it
a
Rousing music and evokes fond memories watching MOTD beforehand in an era where the Union Jack adorned the fences
We had Berlin booked for this weekend. It was cancelled this morning - they offered a refund or to re-book with no extra charge, which we have done. Our original flights were £60, the flights we have now booked for August would have set us back about £300. Plus, we have a seat now whereas if we had waited until nearer the time the prices would be sky-high and everyone will be looking to go away so no guarentees

The economic impact is really starting to bite now. People being laid off and made redundant.
The government need to think of ways of getting money to people quickly. Applying for things takes an age. I’ve read about the possibility of sending everyone an amount of money each month so they don’t go under and can at least pay the rent and buy food. Obviously some people don’t need it but It might help a lot of people even if only for a couple of months or so.
They could also instruct the councils to make April and May the free months for the year for council tax instead of Feb/March (assuming all councils do it over 10 months) and cover the costs to the councils in the meantime by short term loan.
The could cover the utility companies cash flows for the next 3 months and make water, gas and electric free to an agreed amount.
They could instruct the lenders to give everyone a 3 months payment holiday and those who don’t want it can change this rather than making people in desperate need apply.
Grand gestures and promises are all very well but they need to make it easier for these things to happen.
Maybe the above wouldn’t work I don’t know but it seems it’s all grand gestures at the minute and very little fine detail.
I am not offering lol ,i am surprised nobody else has thought about itThink you need to re read this kaz you'll send the place into a frenzy8-).
flights to Thailand were £600 each, cancelled will get refund. Business class over Xmas is £1200. I’ve always wanted to fly business class thinking about taking the gamble

Remember this is a PANdemic. Global travel will not be the same for a very long time.
In all honesty I think it'll be a long way down the road before we can make a judgement of any kind regards the way this has been dealt with.I think the difference in stance has nothing to do with the leadership but rather the consideration of the science as presented and an appreciation of timescale. This isn't over in 12 weeks, we might have control of it by then, i.e. turned the tide. This is here until we have a vaccine, an effective treatment and some measure of herd immunity.
