COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Yes that is puzzling, but my take on it is that flu could also be contained if we took the draconian measures already seen, closing down communities, shutting people in theIr homes and even welding the doors shut. It's just we've never done that with flu. And never could because the expected mortality could never justify it. So flu always has to spread uncontrolled whereas in these unprecedented times, we do have the possibility of containing COVID-19.
Also the flu jab is available for the elderly before the winter season starts. People's immunity systems are used to the flu.
The vaccine isn't there for this yet.

I agree with @TheRemainsOfTheDave on this as well. There is reasonable grounds for hope that summer may bring some respite. The scientists will have modelled all of this and will be looking at measures to try to lower the peak - push cases out a few weeks/months - as much as possible. Fuck it, I am going to draw it...

What we want is the green line, not the red one.

That's very neat!

I understand the flattened curve idea - I don't think it has a lot to do with my comment though (I may be missing something). I thought much of the curve idea was to prevent overload on resources.

Summer will be better for various reasons which add up - I'd suggest these include less people will have colds so less spluttering and spreading; more sunlight/uv/temperature which will make the virus degrade better (surfaces would heat up in direct sunlight, and viruses don't like heat).

You speak a lot of sense and in principal I agree with what you say in regards to balance.
But the issue with me is the NHS. I don't think people understand how overworked they are under normal circumstances.
Now I have Crohns disease and it can be very severe. Before Xmas my kidneys failed twice and I had two stays in hospital. The first time I went to Crumpsall. While I was waiting for a bed, I was sat in a corridor on a drip. In this corridor there were old people lay on beds, being treated in absolutely freezing conditions. There were people having bloods taken in waiting rooms. It was horrendous.
Now I got out and a week later my kidneys failed again and I was in a really bad way. I managed to get myself to the MRI. I had a 5 hour wait while they took my bloods, was told that I would be staying in. I had a cannula put in and drip attached, then had to sit in the A&E waiting room for 6 hours while they found a bed they transport people on to procedures for me. Another 12 hours later I got onto a ward.
The staff were absolutely fantastic but there is absolutely no way the NHS can cope. Not a chance.

absolutely mate and that is why those of us who are under the age of 60 with no pre existing conditions should not put extra pressure on the nhs unless absolutely necessary . In that category You are more than likely be ok so if you feel you have symptoms then you should self isolate and treat yourself at home. I tell you what there will be loads of people who have a cold will be demanding testing and treatment from the nhs when they don’t need it.

non essential operations and treatments should be postponed to release resource to deal with it as well ( I am sure this is happening )

I made the point about needless tests a while back.
Worse than the waste of testing people who don't need it is that a portion of those people will be back repeatedly, determined to prove that they need the test.

my mates a GP he said his “regular customers” visit demanding a test when they don’t need it! They then come back a week later.....

there are a lot of strains of the flu, and the vaccine changes each year to suit the stains around. if a new strain came along then the vaccine may not work.

I am self isolating as of today. I have no immune system to fight it off. This woulduck me right up.
