COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Btw - Liverpool again was up to its highest in many weeks and for the third or fourth time in the past week was outperformed by Manchester on the Pop Score rise given Manchester's higher population. But also for the second time this week had fewer actual cases than Liverpool.

Knowsley also had its highest numbers in weeks.

Now who is it will have fans when playing City this weekend? And why exactly will City not on Saturday?

These tiers are nonsense. We all know it. They need dumping fast. And a one for all all for one mentality recreated for the tough weeks ahead. Not one where envy and desire to cheat an unfair decision you perceive as aimed at you (even though it will not be) creates the very problem the tiers are supposed to prevent.

Obviously the care of Covid patients places an immense strain on the NHS, with staff shortages, illness, isolation etc and the end result is what we all see before us today. Not too sure our government could have foreseen this global debacle that we now find ourself in, so a little difficult to fully prepare for such an eventuality and be up to speed in it's onset. I must say it did seem bizzare to build the Nightingale hospitals under the assumed knowledge that they would never be able to staff them and more a case of appearing to be doing something to appease the populace than doing nothing. The wife has to wait for an op for a plate/wire to be fitted to a broken wrist which is scheduled for next Thursday morning so in essence a ten day lead time. Hopefully her booked Sunday Covid test will produce negative as their window to repair is under a fortnight. The old Indian saying of "it is what it is" and all we can do as unwilling participants is go along with the flow. Are we happy she has to wait so long to be mended, why no, but these are extenuating circumstances so keep up the good work Boris. You were wrong with the fish though.

Another 574 people have died within 28 days of a positive COVID-19 test.

The number of COVID-19 patients in hospitals is also nearly at the highest it has been since the start of the pandemic.

A total of 21,286 patients were in hospital as of 22 December, which is only slightly lower than the record 21,683 patients on 12 April at the peak of the pandemic.

Merry Christmas to all.

We have an early present.
The wife and teenage daughter both tested positive today.

Both are very careful- wife is a headteacher and Daughter school is small and careful too.
Son and I now waiting to hear if we have the same present.

You just don’t know , so all be careful.
Best wishes to you all, fingers crossed for a full recovery.

For Andyhinch: Cheshire East

Cases 132 - down from 156. Total cases 10, 982.

Pop score up 35 to 2859.

Weekly Pop up 10 from 218 to 228.

This is why Cheshire ended up in tier 3 unfortunately as these numbers have been climbing day by day.

Greater Manchester highlights:

Odd day. Down 54 to 943. So the % of NW total falls to 33% - lowest yet.

Manchester and Stockport both well down on yesterday, which is good.

But FIVE of the ten boroughs now above 100 for first time in many weeks. Though only just.

Best performer today again Bolton.

Sadly Trafford still climbing a lot from its best in GM performance a week or two ago and was over 100 for the first time in 6 or 7 weeks.

I really hope someone is investigating why.

Could be the new strain has taken root there?
I think a lot of peole in Trafford are sick of the preferential treatment given to Liverpool and compliance has faltered. I was In Sainsbury’s in Urmston yesterday and it was a bit manic. Six weeks ago, everyone in the queue were wearing masks and respecting social distancing. Maybe the downgrading of the local hospital has led people to think less about the pressures on the NHS too (but that’s just a hunch).

Other watch areas:

Kent:

Dartford 140 - down from 149. Total cases 4541.

Pop score up 106 to 3053. Weekly Pop rises again sadly from 855 to 918.

Medway 400 - down from 428. Total cases 13, 915.

Pop score up 143 to 4995. In 18 days Medway has risen there from a Pop score of 2768. Frightening numbers from the 2000 club to the 5000 club tomorrow in under 3 weeks.

Weekly Pop up from 1060 to 1084. No need to comment sadly.

Hopefully just that. But it has certainly started to escalate suddenly in past 2 weeks. Not alone but more obvious given its best in GM low numbers for so many months. Really weird to see former really badly infected places like Bolton soaring past it.

It could well be the more infectious strain like you suggested but there has been a deterioration in attitudes regarding Covid safety measures.
