COVID-19 — Coronavirus

You can't just bring back retired medical staff, they have to have their knowledge reviewed and skills updated, that all takes time and why would they want to go back to a stressful job, file under the same lip service on NHS staffing and 40 new hospitals

You can also imagine they are wetting their pants at the prospect of getting 20k back into the NHS however badly prepared they may be but just for one week so they can capture that total on paper and quote it for ever more as election promise completed.

13 years ago I read a book called the shock doctrine. It was about how vulture capitalism works.

Looking at the reaction in the states by their government it’s in full effect over there and will soon be the same over here.

You want policy forever to be based on possible Armageddon around the corner at any given time, give the political point scoring a day off.
Yeah, because the NHS has been coping just fine until this coronavirus business.

Of course you can criticise a government for decisions it makes that reduce our ability to effectively deal with a crisis. If a government slashes spending on flood defences and then you get flooding from an "unforeseen" storm (the kind that comes every few years) then it's legitimate to criticise them. If the Australian government, as alleged, slashed spending on fire services in the lead up to the recent bush fires (another 'unforeseen' situation that happens every year), then it's legitimate to ask whether that decision harmed their ability to deal with the crisis. In fact, the Tories themselves were very quick to point out when Labour's overspending increased the impact of the financial crash of 2008 on the UK economy. And Labour supporters were doing exactly what you're doing now and portraying it as something that was completely out of the government's control. And yes, that's correct in both cases, but that doesn't mean that decisions the government has made won't potentially hinder our ability to deal with the entirely predictable problem when it happens (another outbreak that was completely unforeseen, except for the ebola outbreak, the zika virus, SARS, MERS or the swine flu pandemic, to name a few just from this century, that gave us a few warnings first).

For anyone that would like a review of where we are in the outbreak with a heavy dose of humour.

I am not a big fan of John Oliver, especially after his recent comments about City (he is a Liverpool supporter), but I do think he does a decent job here of talking about the middle road we should all be on when it comes to our response to the pandemic.

It will be very interesting to see how the FA, PL, EFL, and UEFA handle the matches remaining in the various competitions. I am not sure this plan would be workable should players or club staff contract the virus (even though, based on current evidence, most would more than likely not be at risk for a severe case, they could spread it to others that could then transmit to people who are at higher risk).

It’s quite telling that this is their “worst case” scenario, though, not surprising.

Fucking empty seats everywhere

Washing your hands is good advice, but making that the ****ing totality of the guidance from the government is farcical. We’re still looking for the a real, reasonable, comprehensive response... though, none of us are holding our breathe.
The government is undoubtedly dragging its feet, no surprise there. But part of the problem is that in this country they need the consent and cooperation of the public. They can’t impose restrictions like China, the public don’t blindly follow government instructions as in Japan. And public opinion is at least 30 days behind the facts on the virus. They really should be restricting large public gatherings now, but they won’t do it until there are thousands of cases and quite few deaths. Calls for self isolation will continue to fall on deaf ears. Blame the government by all means, they deserve it. But it’s also the British culture that stops them from taking effective action.

No - I just don't think its at all safe to run an NHS with 100% bed occupancy and massive staff shortfalls - and thats without the threat of a pandemic ffs ! The problem is the govt have conditioned people to accept a lower standard of NHS performance as normal and have zero extra capacity built in. If you go into a garage workshop some days there isn't a lot to do but your local BMW dealer knows that working staffing to align with the lowest demand means you lose custom when someone tries to book a service and are told there are no bays available but they may fit you in in 2 months time.....the driver doesn't care if some days the mechanics get an hour off to read sat in the sun or to kick a ball about they are paying for a service - as are we with the NHS - and reasonably expect the service to be there when its needed and as advertised.

We don't need extra hospital capacity because this virus is mild and doesn't cause most people any big problems. Isolation and stopping the spread is far more important as most people without health issues can ride out the virus at home.

If it gets worse then the money should go to funding GP appointments over the phone or by Skype or even to make home testing available... Things like that.

The main people who use doctors are older people and older people are most at risk from this virus. Having older people mixing with others in GP surgeries and hospitals is a recipe for disaster.

This virus is not mild for a proportion of those who get it and it will absolutely hammer hospitals if it becomes widespread.

Exactly. Player health and safety doesn't even get considered, it seems.

Worst case should be if too many matches are postponed, what do we do given the Euros may also still take place and the games may not get played this season.

Money,money, money.

Whilst I accept that, I'd suggest that 'older people' would be very uncomfortable using Skype, assuming they even know it exists

well thought out post
Well frankly the comparison is meaningless Covid has so far hit one small part of one country in a big way which has taken extreme measures to prevent it's dissemination which look like they are going to be unsuccessful, flu is present in the whole world since the beginning of the year. Every indication is that Covid is going to be a lot more dangerous than seasonal flu.
