Hundreds of thousands are also never being tested, so we've no idea how many actually had it in the first place, though I'm sure some deaths are being attributed to other causes too.

The most obvious thing is that we have little idea of any of the actual numbers, the official number of getting it world wide is just over 156,000, the real number could be 10 times that or more.

Exactly, there's no way anyone that knowledgeable would simply claim that deaths/confirmed cases is the exact death rate, it just doesn't work that way and everyone knows it.

This thread is uncannily reminiscent of Brexit.
Didn't know you guys had been panic buying bog rolls at the time.
Don’t want to sound patronising, but your English is exceptional. Is Italian your first language?
Well yes, my first language is hand gestures. I've been lucky enough to have good English teachers in school.

Sorry I'm not sure what the relevance of that is?
Well, belief is an important component in decision making, as you pointed out in your reference to the qualifications of the WHO Director
I stopped believing him when he said you can't catch the virus at a football game...
I missed that - but at least he's a medically qualified doctor and didn't choose President Mugabe to serve as the WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Africa.

It’s impossible to say. For example, in China where it’s more or less run its course (until they remove the lockdown) there are 3100 deaths and 3600 critical out of 81000. That would give a worst case of 8% fatal if all the critical ones died. They won’t of course but even if none die the rate would be 3.8%. The big unknown is how many had it and were never tested and recovered out of sight. To get it to 1%, there would have to be at least another 230,000 untested cases, which is more than possible.
I think from here on it the numbers will be useless, less testing means we will never get the full picture, the number of dead is the only certain figure

I am very uneasy about the pre-existing health probs line, what are they including in that, one illness doesn't mean to say you are going to die of something else,i didn't have any probs with my lungs before this but if i had died they would have used my other illness in the announcement

I feel like they are using this line as it stops the population from panicing and a sort of oh they were ill anyway kind of vibe

Anyone else feeling really anxious about all this ?
Yeh. I was diagnosed with a bone marrow failure disease in October last year. There's not a cure for it, but I have an infusion every two weeks that help manage the condition and keep my alive. But essentially, I have pretty much no immune system as my bone marrow doesn't produce enough cells. I'm 34, and it was a massive shock coming to terms with what happened and how life would be going forward. Just getting to grips with it and then corona happens, and although initially wasn't too concerned, the more I read.... The more it feels all a little bit scary.

The good thing is that you are still typing on this forum, and that's a very good thing. I just hope I can read this message I am typing right now in another month ;)

Do you not think that family members might be tweeting out all over the place that there was nothing wrong with the victims if that was the case?

I would have thought that we would have seen more instances of this from all over if all government's were manipulating this fact.

Yes they want to reassure us and prevent panic and it's also true that underlying serious health conditions together with advanced age make folk more likely to die if they get the virus.
