Seems to me that as Johnson's hero is Churchill he has gambled it all on the advice he has been given rather than adopting other more herd like if you like approaches to combating the virus. If he is right then he is the Churchill of his dreams... if not he is a Churchill who just gave in to the Germans.......I just wonder if it is a gamble is it appropriate ?

One other thing we can do to help us stay safe is the following...

Check for mould and mildew in your house. If you are spending more time in it (due to self isolation or just in general) with poor ventilation and/or high moisture levels indoors; Your respiritory system is under attack constantly isn't it. If you have a damp basement then stick a dehumidifier in it or any room likely to build up excess moisture in the atmosphere, older build homes for example. Buy a good quality mould and mildew killer, i suggest "Astonish Mould and Mildew Blaster" It kills the spores on contact and you don't have to climb up to scrub it after. If you can though, just keep the basement used to a minimum so the door is not open and closed all the time. The same should apply to any attic areas.

Not trying to teach granny to suck eggs here, it is just something we can easily overlook. A not seeing the woods for the trees kind of deal whilst we all seem to be laser focussed on hand washing and bog roll. It is also something we "will sort out later" if it is just a small patch that is easily forgot if out of obvious site.

I have an old build house that had mould and mildew in some high areas due to unoccupation and/or poor maintainance by previous owners etc. After spraying that Astonish stuff once, none has returned. I am sure there will be others that work but just from first hand experience that stuff is spot on, works really well.

Was round at my parents’ earlier and my mum, who is quite a hardy and pragmatic soul usually, does seem genuinely worried by this. She’s 73 and asthmatic, but otherwise relatively youthful for her age. I’d assumed she’d just take this in her stride but she looked scared and vulnerable in a way I’ve never seen before. Not really sure why I’m sharing this, but it’s kind of brought the grim reality of the situation crashing home tonight.
Very scary times mate, only normal anyone should feel worried, it just so happens your mum is normal and it’s normal you noticed, what is confusing is this is not the norm, it’s fucking way beyond anything we can comprehend and as such allow for it, wish u and urs as well as u can b.

Oh do fuck off, you cock. Adding absolutely nothing to the debate, whatsoever.
I will happily take my ban. He’s even got ‘likes’ ffs.
Just wondered if you’d seen this. It suggests your theory that the COVID-19 deaths will be lost in the noise is a bit premature.
Christ, the poor bloody Italians are getting smashed by this virus. The following video shows the difference in deaths in the lombardy region Feb 9th then today, 3 pages to 10 in one month!

Of note: PhD students are scientists, they get published as first authors in scientific studies.
Things must have changed since I was a Ph.D student, it was the student's supervisor who was always the first author on published work, the student was second.

I certainly wouldn't rank any Ph.D student - no matter how capable - as being on a level with experienced research scientists.

A recent article on CNN is suggesting spread is mainly caused by people who are asymptomatic (i.e. NOT showing any symptoms).

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/14/...content=2020-03-14T20:00:04&utm_medium=social

This would explain an awful lot. Also confirms that keeping away from as many people as possible is the best way to avoid getting the virus, as you have no idea if you are with someone who isn't showing symptoms. Also confirms that large gatherings are dangerous even if all the people attending have no symptoms. There will still be spreaders amongst the group.

"Of course there is a risk," he said. "But on average one person infects two or three others.

"You therefore have a very low probability of infecting a large number of people in a stadium, or a rather higher probability of infecting people very close to you, and that means most of the transmission tends to takes place with friends and colleagues in close environments, not in the big environments.

"It is true that any cancellations of things can have some effect (but) if you then get a displacement activity, when everyone congregates somewhere else, you may have perversely an increased risk, particularly in an indoors environment.

"So it doesn't mean you should at some point make the decision for the resilience point that has been discussed, but this is not a major way to tackle this epidemic.

"The major ways are to try and reduce and delay the transmission across households and people who have become infected and that why that is the concentration of the first actions."
He didn't say that you can't get it at a football match or large gathering, but that it's much less likely than giving it to your families and coworkers or people you're sharing a pub with so those are the more effective ways to stop the spread.

How many times are we going to have this fucking conversation? How does everyone get to the stadium? Transporter beam? is a coach a close environment? A bus? Mixing on the concourse afterwards? The pub before and after? Jumping all over each other and yelling in people’s faces round you when a goal goes in?

And if the game is cancelled or a concert called off what is this ‘displacement activity’ shite? You reckon we are all going to turn up to a stadium with nothing going on and shuffle around like a scene from ‘The Walking Dead’?

And then next week we cancel large events. On what grounds? I mean is it high risk now? One week ok. Next week not?

Fucks sake.

I posted the quotes because karen requested them.

If you want to get in an argument about this with someone, fuck off somewhere else because I'm not interested.

I don't know, I've seen PhD students put as first authors, guess it depends on the work. And I do agree about them not being on the same level of a researcher with more experience. Nonetheless, I'd say they are scientists. But this is semantics of course. Most of all, I didn't like her tone.

Normally after such things the na

im pretty sure I’d like to know where the people where from wouldn’t you?

I'm pretty sure their families wouldn't like you to know. They'd probably be treated like lepers. I think they do tell you where they are from (region not precise location)
