COVID-19 — Coronavirus

The London Nightingale hospital might be closed shortly as it hasn't admitted a new patient for a week and at the last count it had only 19 patients.

personal view is these hospitals are going to be crucial to our way out of the lockdown.

when we come out we are going to see a second wave of infections. With flu season over it gives us a lot of capacity to handle infections without having to do a second lockdown.

Extremely useful info mate and of course outcome too!!

If you had never heard of COVID how would you have described your illness severity? I mean like "had a bit of man flue" to "thought I was at deaths door"?

I'm interested because we have no real idea how many people had this in Jan-Feb-March but I have a high suspicion it was many more than current thinking.

I had flu once a few years ago
( always had flu jab since)
And to be honest the flu effect was about twice as bad as the effect that covid had on me.

Missed the start of the briefing, what did he say about testing?

Medical

Five tests

Movement of people,social interactions down

Daily tests,up down last 24hrs a bit (funny that after peak on target day)

Hospital patients,down london,stable everywhere

Critical care,decreasing

Death rates,trend is down,gradually

New cases,

Global death rates, worst in europe, second to states

Questions

Immunity question ? we don't have enough evidence yet, needs more study, elderly don't seem to have much immunity, some have good response but we dont know for how long, same stance as WHO

Food banks and food supplies/vulnerable people ?,those shielded get food parcels and charities and councils are providing food, helping people through benefits

Lifting of lockdown, how long for those shielding? 1.8 million people, appreciate there difficulties, helped with practical things like food deliveries and medicines ,also encouraging councils to get calls into to chat to people, they have to stay shieldied ,mental health services

Track and trace, where are we in planning ? Aiming for very quick tests and results ,staff being recruited, using app and phone calls, everybody has to take part

What if people don't take part, download the app etc ? Thinks people will as they have so far done what asked, social distancing still counts, focus on care homes and people in hosp and who they have been in contact with,a pic will be built up,genomic testing or something

Follow up on shielding? can move from food boxes to online shopping priority slots if they want, all ages in shielded category ,tailored help and mental health help

Contact question, how much contact does someone have to have to isolate ? Identify those at highest exposure, respiratory and contact with surfaces with this virus but mainly respiratory ,close contact is people in same household,in close face to face with someone with symptoms, time spent with someone close together, being in close contact with someone who has tested positive, more testing for those like care home workers and residents

Jobs in airline industry question, retention scheme, furlough etc

Mass gatherings ? Have been thinking about different settings, how to make them safe,we are not yet at that point, people have to maintain social distancing, lower transmission outdoors it seems but interconnected with public transport, pubs, getting in car together(seem to be leaning towards outdoors being ok soon) not a good idea to go to pub or pack a car on the way to an event, anyway not yet,for now more on parks etc
Plans set out next week

Latest study from NY state suggests mortality is at 1% of all cases, based on 24,000 deaths out of 12.3% infected out of the population of 19.5 million.

If that rate is applied to the UK, it suggests about 3 million have been infected here or about 5% of our population.

Interesting article on the UK death states:
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/20...one-worst-world-fighting-coronavirus-experts/
We didnt control our borders, we locked down a week late, track and trace wasn't up to scratch (let alone track, test and trace), not enough testing and underlying health conditions in the uk are frighteningly bad.
I'll add a whole list of other factors that are apparant from documentaries I have seen on COVID-19 in South Korea, Twaiwan, China etc.
1. When there is illness in the community people wear facemasks and social distance naturally. BIrd Flu, SARS, etc have made this defacto. Not to protect the individual but to protect everybody else from the individual. Most importantly, limiting the aerosols generated akso limits the amount of virus that gets on to surfaces. Let alone in the air.
2. Social distancing. When illness is in the community people social distance naturally.
3. You can't get in a building or on to a mass transit station without a temperature check. If you fail you have to go home.
4 Hand sanitizer is everywhere. Stations and building entrances, road crossing points etc. If you have to touch something you can sanitize your hands pretty much instantaneously. This point is probably the worst failure of Europe and the US.
5. Mass disinfecting leaps into force, public transport, stations, trains, tube/metro/trams, buses, building entrance, lifts, stairwells. Again something that just doesn't happen in the UK or US. It has happened to some degree in continental europe though.

I am at a bit of a loss at the moment. I am 70+ and in March we were told to self isolate which I have been doin, just going out for daily exercise. Today they asked about what is to happen to people who are isolating like me but only mentioned people who have underlying problems. Am I still expected to self isolate or not?

Did you get the letter to self isolate for 12 weeks ? Even if not the thinking seem to be that the older you are the weaker your immune system gets even if you do not have underlying health problems,i would stick to what you are doing for now
