Sadly the headline in the telegraph is lockdown looms over christmas. This lockdown will last to April at the earliest

Expect a lot of retailers to go bust by March.

Felixstowe and Southampton are loaded with stagnant full containers in fields because retailers have no space for the stock or refusing to accepts containers yet due to stock holding.

A personal post here.
Always been a pub man, pre corona watch the football then down the pub 3 or 4 pints.
No football on bit earlier maybe 5 pints.
Always, always used to laugh at people who drank in home.

So first lock down grin and bear it, towards the end started with a box of beer in home 1 or 2 bottles a night

Second lockdown, depressed, straight into 8 bottles a night. Every night.
Must be many with similiar stories.

Try and ease off pal and keep busy.

Drinking at home is lethal, always seems to drink faster at home than I do when I'm out (I only drink on Saturday's). I'm not sure if it's due to the strength or gas in bottled/canned lager and draught beer is stronger so takes longer to drink. You are also talking when you are out so you take your time with the drink etc.

I’m sure this has been covered plenty already, but this thread moves so fast and there is so much to read through.

I don’t claim to have a great understanding of vaccines and the testing process. Approx 90 vs 6 symptomatic cases in the placebo/vaccine tests. All participants going about their lives as normal. I’m sure it will just be important details that I’ve missed - how does this take it out of the realms of possibility that those given the vaccine did not just have a little more luck not coming into contact with the virus?

I haven’t got the numbers to hand and may be mixing up studies, but for example with cases at 100 per 100k you would expect an average of 16 or so cases in a 15k test group. I haven’t thought about it all too much - hoping you clever folk can help me understand.
I think sheer numbers involved make that unlikely. Plus the profile of the volunteers. My 18 year old daughter starts a vaccine trial today. Young, lives in a high incidence area, uses public transport, works in a school kitchen, when not in lockdown works evenings with a kids theatre group. I think it becomes harder to run trials when infection rates are low, which is why they are looking at ‘challenge’ trials in the new year.

If you’re having 16 or 24 bottles of beer a night mate you should seriously seek help. You might be able to work and function now but that shit will catch up with you.

I drink too much and I’m trying to manage - difficult during a lockdown - but I’m more like 4 bottles a night and that worries me.

started drinking everynight back in April, put on weight, then had a month off in Sep. and now just drink at weekends. feel better for it and lost the weight i put on.

I agree Spain and Belgium have a higher death rate per 100,00 of the population but we are the worst overall regarding the actual number of deaths

As of 16 November 2020, 267 394 deaths have been reported in the EU/EEA and the UK: United Kingdom (51 934), Italy (45 229), France (44 548), Spain (40 769), Belgium (14 421),
That’s like comparing apples with oranges.
Spain has about a third of our population and Belgium is even less. Italy, AFAIR, have about 2/3rds of our population. Therefore you need to take into account size of population as just one of the factors in the rate of death.

Spain's population is not a third of ours. It's 47million in Spain v 68million in UK

I doubt it. On cost alone, that would be prohibitive, but on health grounds, it is excessive.

Think you're head is buried in the sand there personally. The amount of people that started drinking at home during the first lockdown would have been huge, most of my mates seemed to be. Once you get into the habit it's a difficult one to break. Cost wise you can get 8 beers at home for the price of 3 pints so not sure that's going to stop people.

Think, and I may be wrong here so please correct me if I am, but aren’t the populations of both Spain and France (and most Mediterranean countries) older than the U.K.? Surely this would have an impact too?

So many are not able to earn atm or are on much reduced wages (furlough). Because you can get it cheaper, doesn't mean its still affordable to some, or a good path to be taking

Good post. I managed around two months off it over summer and felt great but have slipped back in a bit recently. At the start of lockdown I did in a bottle of whisky at home one night and woke up in a puddle. I haven't touched a spirit since and i'm unsure if I ever will.

I was drinking 5 medium strength beers three nights a week before my summer hiatus. As of late I have been doing it two nights a week but the same amount. I am finding that because i'm stressed a lot from day to day then drinking seems to exacerbate that and turn me into a bit of an argumentative bellend, and then you have to wake up with the dread the next day. This week I will be trying to return to my summer approach to drinking.

The idea of drinking is always better than the reality in my opinion.

Look up null hypothesis, p value and confidence intervals.

This sounds a bit out there but have you tried vitamin D supplements? The lack of sun is a big one in terms of depression at this time of year.

I'm on them now as we never leave the house at the moment except to shop and it isn't like you can sit out in the garden. It's weird and probably placebo but it does work. I started on them about a week ago and I've felt a lot better.

If you feel better then the booze will probably go with it because people only drink out of boredom and feeling like they need it to take the edge off how they're feeling.

Our biggest issue is haulage, just cant get stuff off quay quick enough and the rail is constantly failing.

Anyone been for a test, went yesterday and had to do it myself.
Was like trying to get in a military base,
No photos,do exactly as i say, stop there move 20yrds stop, open your car window 20mm to understand what they were saying,(sometimes).
Not to sure I got both side of the tonsils fking gagging, got up the hooter ok I think.
My opinion is maybe some might not of got it correct,
Which seems pointless if that's the case,
Never recieved the scan code either so they took car reg which came up with my details, but had to call a mobile numb,to speak with someone who by chance was fking stood by my passenger door,
Very strange experience.
