COVID-19 — Coronavirus

Was told about a batch of the Pfizer vaccine going to waste in Macclesfield due to it not being stored properly. This is a real game changer how it can be stored in a normal fridge!!! Definitely light at the end of the tunnel although gonna be a difficult few months ahead.
We need a covid bingo card.

So do we have an actual figure on how effective the Oxford one is? Is it still 62% since they’re doing two full doses.

How effective is the Oxford vaccine?

There are three figures doing the rounds - 62%, 70% and 90%.
The first analysis of the trial data showed 70% of people were protected from developing Covid-19 and nobody developed severe disease or needed hospital treatment.
The figure was just 62% when people were given two full doses of the jab and 90% when they were first given a half dose and then a full one.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has approved two full doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine.
However, unpublished data suggests that leaving a longer gap between the first and second doses increases the overall effectiveness of the jab.
There was not enough clear data to approve the half-dose, full-dose idea.
All the vaccines are expected to be equally effective against the new variants of the virus that have emerged.

The guy from Oxford on tv earlier reckoned about 70% is the headline figure but said further detail would be published later today by the MHRA. My guess is that it’ll be up nearer the 90% once you’ve had the second jab after 12 weeks.

Anyone know if The Oxford vaccine is ok with people who have allergies? My other gran wasn’t able to have the pfizer one because of her allergy to penicillin. So hopefully the Oxford one will be ok?

Did you ask for Leighton only asking as also in MCHT area
No choice in the matter but I don't know if this is because I am care home staff and I was booking it literally as news was breaking about the Oxford vaccine which I presume will be more readily available from GP surgeries and other more local hubs.

The MHRA have approved the two full doses regime but with a gap of 12 weeks between the two shots. It seems there is evidence that the longer gap also increases efficiency, which if true is a huge bonus. Another very salient point is that no-one in any age group in the trials was hospitalised or died if they did contract Covid after having the vaccine. This applies to the two full doses and the dose and a half regime.

Why are they waiting until Monday that’s nearly a week away, should have hit the ground running.
Monday is a decent turnaround mate, given that it’s Wednesday and the vaccine has to be delivered and extra workforce capacity deployed above that for dishing out the Pfizer and flu vaccines. People also have to be contacted to attend to receive the vaccine.

Could be was asking more for my parents 88 and 89 with conditions they had been told at Gp's when booking an appointment for something else to expect contact next week but never said were it would be done.

Right ... give me some good news people..

with the roll out of more vaccines when do you predict a small sense of normality will begin again? How long will it take for the most vulnerable to be protected so the less so can ease up on restrictions ?

im not bothered about wearing masks, got used to that totally.
im talking pubs starting to open up again and such things

what time scales ? I can handle any news if i know an end point, but i struggle big time with the unknown

(ive dipped over xmas and need a lift and some light at the end of the tunnel)

My in-laws in Macclesfield, similar ages to your parents were due to have theirs at the GP surgery last week but their appointments were cancelled as apparently a storage error ruined the entire batch. Less likely with the Oxford vaccine which looks like it will be available in the next few days, the only thing holding it back will be the logistics.

There will always be outliers but I think its pretty clear its having less impact on people with good health.
That’s true, you’re far far less likely to get critically ill or die. If this nation was fitter and healthier we’d be in a much better position than we are with the death numbers and people in hospital, stretching the NHS.

But it’s still leaving muscle injury-like scarring on lung tissue of people with no health conditions, much like a bicep or calf muscle injury would, which will affect people for years/life.

If you’re usually an active person or a sportsman, this could have huge implications on being able to perform at the level you did before.

It all depends how much we have of it and how fast we can roll it out. I think by Easter we might to see some positive changes but I think it’s pretty tough to put a definite timescale on it as there’s so many variables.

The worst week of my life in terms of illness.

We had to call an ambulance out to me on Xmas Eve night just before midnight.

It was so upsetting for wife and kids, couldn't stop coughing and my temp was at 38.4.

The paramedics were first class and could see I was conflicted about going to hospital and potentially be asked to stay in for a few hours.

I'd not even gone into the loft to get the Xmas presents down and that was also praying on my mind, which might sound stupid to many.

They checked my blood pressure and oxygen levels and had me walk up and down our stairs a couple of times.

In the end they prescribed me some antibiotics for a possible secondary chest infection and told me to go straight to A&E if things got worse.

Walking up and down a loft ladder at 1am in the morning and bringing down sacks of presents is not something I would ever want to repeat or recommend.

Wife did her first Xmas Dinner and I managed to eat some and make the best of it with her and the kids.

I just can't shake the terrible thirst during the night and heat and cold sweats.

I've tried sleeping on my stomach, just to try and open my airways and am now into my seventh day.

Coughed up some blood in the shower this morning but it was filled with muscus and spit also after I deliberately tried to hack something up.

I don't mind admitting, this whole thing has shaken me to my core and scared the absolute shit out of me. I'm a fit guy, albeit, 46, with no underlying health conditions.

My wife and son come out of their own isolation today and they were pretty much recovered within four days and just lethargy.

My mum and dad watched from the road as my kids opened their presents in the front window.

It was heartbreaking, but it was the best we could do and it kept my folks safe.

It is a horrible, nasty virus which grabs a hold of you in so many different ways, next time you might hear someone talk about it with any degree of flippancy, walk away in the opposite direction - quickly!
So sorry to hear this. Hope you are gradually feeling better!

People will continue to act selfishly. If being locked down does not suit their lifestyle choice they will continue to put everyone at risk.

Selfish pathetic individuals who don’t care.
And they always seem to find some sort of justification for it n’all. As if, in their own mind, spreading the virus and potentially affecting other people for life or even killing others, doesn’t matter because they’ve got a reason that makes it alright in their head.
