Back from Torquay. Hotel rates were exorbitant. B&B for a week for not much less than a week on all inclusive at a 5 star resort in Greece. Add in meals out and drinks and it was considerably more expensive in Torquay.

When I was a kid we couldn't afford holidays abroad for many years (and this isn't a sob story about how poor we were, because we weren't in the big scheme of things) so a series of holidays in caravans in the Lake District were the order of the day. Hence, whilst I understand people need a break, I don't really get why it has to be abroad and why there is so much wailing and gnashing of teeth about how people 'deserve a holiday abroad after all we've been through' (not necessarily from posters on here, by the way).

Surely the point is that people are free to do what makes them happy? Most work all year to be able to enjoy what little holiday time they are entitled to. If staying in the UK is your thing then great, stay in the UK and enjoy yourself. If wanting to go abroad is your thing then again, go abroad and enjoy yourself. What shouldn't happen is those choosing to go abroad getting stick because of some made up notion it's selfish. Forcing people to stay in the UK is selfish and comes from an underlying misguided patriosm that some have developed since the pandemic.
Let people live their lives as they see fit.

I think anybody trying to belittle people for not wanting a long weekend in Skegness as their well earned holiday deserve a little ridicule.

In normal times, absolutely yes. But these are not normal times and these decisions have consequences that potentially affect other people (the more people coming in and out of the country the more difficult to control the spread of variants). With that in mind is it so absolutely terrible and unthinkable to have a holiday in the UK this year?

Was it wall -to- wall sunshine

We were lucky to be honest. 5 good days and only two rainy days. Some nice restaurants there as well. Hotel had a pool which was good but no comparison to what you get in the resorts abroad.

in Cornwall at the moment, thought at one point yesterday I needed Noahs services.

This is the problem with UK holidays isn't it? We've just had the weekend in Anglesey, Saturday and Sunday were lovely, played on the beach and even got a bit of sunburn.
However, when we arrived on the Friday we unpacked the car in the sort of rain that gets you so wet you wonder if you will ever dry out. It was genuinely such a disheartening and miserable experience. Had the forecast been like that for the rest of the weekend I've no idea what we'd have done

But these are not normal times and these decisions have consequences that potentially affect other people (the more people coming in and out of the country the more difficult to control the spread of variants). With that in mind is it so absolutely terrible and unthinkable to have a holiday in the UK this year?

If the people going abroad are not breaking any laws then they should be allowed to carry on regardless of what the situation is.
It’s up to individual governments to implement the rules and if they say you can visit somewhere then by extension they are saying it’s safe. They are adding many caveats which is putting people off but those willing to jump through all the hoops are doing nothing wrong.

Hmmm, it won't just be this year, it'll be the next and the next. If you think they're going to get a handle on these variants and let people be, even if they have their shots and boosters you really haven't been paying attention. If you want to holiday abroad just do it, the squeeze on the airlines will be massive and cheap flights / holidays will soon be a thing of the past.

Exactly right, and now that cases here are soaring many are rightly implementing quarantine rules on visitors from the U.K. What pissed me off was our government setting strict rules for entry into the U.K. from some countries that had a fraction of our case rate whilst leaving the door wide open for people coming in with the delta variant based on the prospects of a trade deal.
