Covid and travel discussion

Our vaccine programme is good, but many other countries are behind us, some massively behind us.

If were recording 50-100k cases a day as is predicted soon, then many countries are likely to restrict us going there as they won't want us bringing Delta over in potentially big numbers when they have yet to fully vaccinate the majority of their own country.

Some countries may put a blanket ban on travel from the UK.
Others might only permit fully vaccinated travellers from the UK (as Portugal and Malta are doing now essentially)

From a national perspective, case rates don't matter too much as long as hospitalisations and deaths remain relatively flat.
From an international perspective, all these other countries will be looking at is case rates here, at least until they hit a level of vaccination domestically that they are happy with.

The news today was a positive step for the travel industry, but it does feel like many more bumps in the road are still to come.

I've got my 2nd jab booked in for Saturday 21st August, and due to be going away the following weekend, so I need to try and bring it forward a week to allow for the 14 day thing to elapse before travel.
Im told that you can just walk in now to get your jab, you don‘t necessarily need to wait for your appointment.

Doesn't the red list get updated again on Thursday?

Be a hazard to book a holiday now and find the destination goes red on Thursday
It does get updated on Thursday.
I am stuck in Turkey till the UK moves it to amber.
The numbers over here are far better than the UK.
If it does not change then I will have to take a 10 day holiday somewhere just to get home.
I am here to work not holiday and it is pissing me off big time that the Turkish holiday shut down has to be wasted on a holiday i dont really want just to get home to my family and my 2nd jab

Yep, should be another announcement (or more likely leak then announcement) on Thursday.

Unless people are looking at relatively obscure holiday destinations, there shouldn't be any obvious bucket and spade places going from amber to red next week.

Turkey looks a candidate for promotion to Amber.
Italy and France rumoured to be going green.
Wouldn't be surprised to see the Balearic Islands relegated to amber, cases have sadly but inevitably spiked over there, particularly Majorca.
Can see Indonesia going red before long.
Rumours Dubai might get amber status but I can't see it happening anytime soon due to the transit/hub problem.

As always, worth remembering the traffic light system is relevant for inbound travel only. Italy might go green but it's still 5 day quarantine for arrivals from the UK at present.
I so hope you are right, the past two announcements Turkey was overlooked , even though the stats were far better than the UK.
The first of the two I could understand as Turkey was in a national lockdown but the second one was grating as I accepted up to that point the UK tough stance on travel especially after the chumps league final was not allowed in the UK but tonights final is along with 2500 uefa dignitaries from anywhere they like.

I think Cyprus have the most rolling cases per 100k in Europe at the moment, would say definitely a good chance they go from amber to red.
Wouldn't be surprised to see Cyprus introduce more local restrictions as well, not sure how fun a holiday would be out there at the moment.

Greece is always good.
Yeah - two families booked for Saturday but have Thursday night reserved for searching for last minute holidays

Might be on here looking for tips

Feel for you mate

We will be both listening nervously on Thursday - for different reasons

Plus 1000 Italian fans allowed to enter the UK for the match.
