Covid and travel discussion

We are booked for Tenerife at the end of September but I’ll bin it if I have to wear a mask on the beach or in bars what’s the point in going! These tests at either end need to be cost effective as well paying and extra £200 is a joke my flight only cost that. £20 a test is reasonable if we really have to have one but if I’ve had the jabs and everyone in Tenerife has then why should we need one. I know we can carry the virus but if they’ve immunised the island it shouldn’t be a problem. Travel is not going to take off (no pun intended) if you rock up have had your jabs but are unfortunately carrying the virus with no symptoms you could be losing thousands of £s when they won’t let you go.

I’ve written it off in my head and am making plans for a trip to the northwest States of the US (Washington, Oregan, Idaho) this time next year.

Hope the weather improves over the summer!
That's the spirit. No point in getting your Alan Whickers in a twist.

A report yesterday from border controls in UK stated that around 8 thousand people a day are entering the UK as tourists. Yet we can't travel in the UK overnight ourselves at moment.

My dad works at Manc airport said people from Pakistan trying to get in before going on the red list via any means possible haha. Flying from Helsinki you name it.

im there in November and as you will not be going if a mask is required for the beach or bars,i dont think that will be the situation but you may have to wear your mask in public, pavements ,shops etc, as for the test yes its £20 worth, not sure how they are doing with immunisation i read on trip advisor there struggling like the rest of the EU but that may have been a dated post,at the end of the day by then we should have had both injections and the place cant be much more risk than the UK, September onwards i think it will be fine fingers crossed

You won't need to wear a mask whilst sat in a bar unless you stand up to leave or go to the toilet, bar etc.
Once on the beach you won't need a mask either. Only when walking about is it necessary.

How the hell will that work in the bars at night though when everyone is pissed though, we all know what the Spanish police (and I use that in the loosest of terns) do to brits. At some point the mask thing is going to have to be binned

I think the curfews will probably stay in place so 11pm finishing times in bars coupled with reduced capacity will probably help. Social distancing isn't going away I don't think, not for at least 12 months anyway.
Most residents I know there are accepting of the mask situation as it stands.

They recently changed it to having to wear a mask also on the beach, even when sunbathing or paddling in the sea. You can take it off when swimming only. The report said this is the new normal for Spain and the Canaries for the foreseeable future. That was last week so not sure if it's changed since then

I love Tenerife and go twice a year. Last summer was good in spite of being quiet, I only had to wear the mask in shops, transport, going to the bar or toilet inside. I was in some bars where no mask was required and it was very relaxed, live music and I could stand at the bar. Just before I left they made wearing masks outdoors compulsory, but you could take them off when on the beach or sunbathing around a pool. Since then they have tightened the rules as stated above.

I was due to go out in December but after having an antigen test they changed the rules saying it wasn't acceptable so I had to cancel. I had friends out there and there was a 10pm -6am curfew and they could only sit on the terrace of bars and at 50% capacity in groups of four. They made the best of it but I'm glad I didn't go.

The mask ruling outdoors is ridiculous, sunshine and vitamin D is beneficial and if it remains in place it will kill the tourist industry dead.

At the moment UK citizens aren't allowed in unless they have a residency and have passed a test. There are extra restrictions in place until April 9th, after that who knows? Anybody thinking of going if things ease enough have to be aware that the vast majority of bars and restaurants, shops etcetera are closed in the tourist areas and won't open until the hotels open and start to fill up. This was the case last year.

This website is quite good for up to date information.

I know Janet well, she's been a brilliant source of information for a lot of expats for many years.
The same rule came out here on the mainland regards the wearing of masks whilst sunbathing but were changed in the next day or so which allow us to take them off as long as all other restriction rules were still in place.
Looks like Tenerife and the canaries may be sticking to the original decision. Be surprised if they don't follow suit though.

Yes she's great. The problem with the Canarian government is they tend to go off on a tangent from mainland Spain but then get reigned back in, that is how I lost my Christmas holiday. Mainland refused the antigen test but the Canaries said they'd still accept it until the Spanish government overuled them.

I love the place but won't be back until the rules relax and things settle down, it's half a holiday and mask wearing outdoors kills it completely.

i wont be gong if this is the case^, just hope things change by November, sunbathing on the sand with a mask on is just ridiculous also the early bar closing, providing your following the guidlines what does it matter if the bar closes at 10pm or 2 in the morning, the only hope is Spain needs the tourism and it has to return for the sake of the economy so it may be relaxed when they realise no one is going

I have friends who own a long established bar out there, the father started it up and the son's now run it. They have been shut almost the whole pandemic. I saw them when I was out in August but they didn't open as very few regulars or Brits were out. They opened for Christmas and New Year as about 30-50 regulars got out there so it was worth their while but the closed in early January as everyone went back.

The mask ruling killed it for me. I'm not a big sun worshipper but I like to go for a walk, sit outside, enjoy the fresh air and sunshine on my face. Although you can do this wearing a mask it's nowhere near the same experience.

Obviously getting the virus under control and saving lives is the most important criteria, but given sunshine and vitamin D intake helps with all that the mask wearing outdoors seems ludicrous.

Yes noticed this morning, as well as the usual Virgin Atlantic from Islamabad there was was Iceland Airlines shortly after from Islamabad landing at Manchester
