I think the plan seems to be to discomfort the bowlers into 1-day mode as the ball gets old and the relief bowlers are on.
Against a team with 4 top level bowlers, it is more likely to struggle.
I think it's also to cover the manifest weakness in technique amongst the England batsmen.

Meanwhile, England finally bowl a proper length and get a wicket. The half-arsed short stuff doesn't bother too many if it's not directed properly - they're all quite happy to flat-bat one down the ground.

Move bat parallel to pitch.
Preferably hit the ball.

Got 2 and half days to bat.Bat properly for gods sake it is called test cricket Ffs.Bat time 30 runs an hour if need be ture out the bowlers and you just might set a tricky total on day 5.On the other hand lets keep playing the way we do and keep losing
