I’ll be happy if Billy Root gets a call up. Not because he’s going to change the shape of English cricket, just so that I can see @ancoats meltdown on this thread.

Whoever they actually pick will be interesting and be partially down to a leap of faith in younger players if they go down that route.

Given that Broad and Anderson are back in the fold, I don’t envisage a leap of faith in that direction. Red ball reset!

Who will be the vice skipper? Given that Stokes is regularly off the field, that may be an important decision. Root?…

Yeah, interesting one. Could give it Broad as a stop gap to give them time to choose or maybe whoever the wicket keeper will be.

Broad is quite possible. It needs to be someone who is likely to play all summer and Broad fits that bill. Choosing a younger player could lead to a 'succession crisis' if Stokes is injured or proves unsuccessful while choosing an older head would buy them a little more time. Key seems to think they can just do it on a Test-by-Test or series basis, but I reckon that philosophy will change the moment they win a Test!

I just think they'll have to make a clean break from Root. As I pointed out in an earlier post on this thread, there was remarkable consistency in team selection in the West Indies, save for a little rotation in the bowling, so I'll be keeping an eye on whether that continues.

That first squad announcement and team selection after the toss will be intriguing.
