His technique will improve with time, and getting 5 50+ scores does says something on SA wickets

He's 27, i dont think his technique is going to improve much, he's not a kid anymore and his 4 day record in county cricket is average, he averages just under 38.

Did you watch any of the games? There were a number of times he hit the ball in the air early in his innings, where there would have been a catcher in test cricket, one day cricket allows you to get away with that and he is a good striker of the ball. Some players are just more suited to one form of the game and not the other.

Mate if voges at 34 can make such an impact so no reason he cant, who would you rather have as cook partner in next test series?

Voges was scoring big runs for years, his first class average is over 46, its just there were a hell of a lot of others ahead of him for Australia so he was unlucky. Now Australia have lost a lot of players he is finally getting a chance. You are comparing apples and oranges.

I am not completely sure a lot will depend on early season form if Hales scores big runs he might keep his place, Carberry (first class average over 42) looked far more suited to test cricket than Hales. Carberry played 5 tests against an on fire Johnson in Australia and then wasnt given another chance against a lesser team or weaker attack. I would also move Compton up to open before considering Hales. Then there is host of players who if they start the season well could be considered like Chopra at Warwickshire or Nick Browne at Essex. If Compton moved up then there are a lot of middle order players who could come in, Hilditch, Vince etc etc.

Axing carberry was a strange decision indeed after the disastrous tour where more established players were unable to perform, only explanation which came to my mind was that he might have been in petersen camp and paid the price, out of all he was the most decent one after strauss

I said earlier in the thread, there are 2 or 3 positions in the batting order up for grabs and early season form will be the deciding factor in who gets the nod, will be interesting to see who gets in.

Take a bow Brendon McCullum. Overnight he broke the record for the fastest century in test cricket in his final test match, twatting the Aussie attack all around Christchurch reaching three figures in 54 deliveries. And, amazingly, 27 of those were dot balls. So he scored 100 off 27 scoring shots (including 16 fours and 4 sixes). And after being "caught" off a no-ball when he was on 39. He eventually fell for 145, caught out near the boundary naturally enough!

Awesome. He's retiring from all forms of cricket, no? Surely he would be a prime candidate to be a franchise 20/20 player in all the different tournaments ala KP?
