Congrat's to Aus for retaining the Ashes. Certainly not a vintage Aus team bar Smith, but they didn't have to be, as they were up against a very poor England team.

Where are these players though mate? The limited overs formats are the ones which the kids want to play and their techniques are honed in accordance. Test match techniques seem to be a thing of the past.

county cricket, do a lot more work in identifying talent and get them early in even if they are not ready the aim is to win the ashes back down under in 2021/22, forget about winning the tours coming up for the next 1 and half years even if we lose them all ?? the tours are not the main target its building the the team and to learn lessons and gel and bond as a team

this england squad is all over the place the batting line up is patched up with ODI cricketers and there is not a bonding or gelling with time spent together, first the new captain but i fear the ECB will appoint a new coach and keep root as captain ??? maybe if we can get some good opening pair and somebody coming in a number 3, then root can play at 4 ?? burns has done enough to be given more time, pope has to be in the team denly the jury is still out with him

bowling wise archer broad woakes and woods and both currans should be the main picks jimmy has to go sorry we are building for the ashes in 2021/22 and he will not be playing then, so maybe the bowling coach job goes to jimmy ?? but the main aim is a fresh new young looking england team for the future

I’d like to see Stokes as captain. We have a habit over here of giving the best player the captaincy, hence Root at the time, but Stokes just has that bit of personality and balls. No idea how good he is tactically but he’s worth a try.

Root needs to concentrate on his form or he will never achieve his potential.

Pope and Foakes is a good shout think Denley done enough for me but bring Sibley into the squad, Vince has had enough chances.

Curiously, we’ve also prepared pitches that have favoured Australia’s quicks and batsmen.

With the inception of The Hundred next year, I fear the state of the English test team is only going to deteriorate further.

T20 is enjoyable and has its place in the game but test cricket should be the priority for every major cricketing nation.

Smith has carried the batting, otherwise not a great batting line up. As for their bowling they are a good, but not a vintage unit, they are hardly Warne, McGrath, Lee, standard. If they were it would be 5-0 no danger.

Main gripe was Aussie had to replace Smith the bloke who came in had been playing county cricket racking up the runs acclimatising to pit conditions! The ECB should change the rules to no touring team who we playing that summer should play any cricket in england!

Sorry, markb, I've no idea how old you are, but I was 12 (and LOVED cricket at that age) when Botham was made captain. Anybody of a similar vintage or older, will tell you what the captaincy did to Botham.

Back on thread, why wasn't Curran anywhere near the Test squads?
He did well last year

Agree about the world cup win over the ashes. Still a bitter pill ti swallow watching them keeping the ashes! Lets win the last test match stopping them winning over here something they haven't done for a long time.

At last! This happens every time there’s a defeat in any sport in the off topic section.
The WC killed England. The best player any of us have seen in our lifetime killed us. The best bowler in the world killed us. One session of dropped catches and a no ball killed us.

Dropping 5 players, changing captains and coach will only make things worse. The coach has gone so there’s gonna be some natural changes anyway. People questioning the likes of Bairstow and Buttler are mad, just like the Moeen doubters. These are the best in the country and they’ll prove it over time.

What some of our players need more than anything is a good rest, but of course we have a mental winter coming up with the NZ tour starting a month after the ashes!

Some of the other players need a bit more red ball practice but it’s impossible with a schedule like we have.

in the same way that stokes needs to concentrate on his bowling and his batting, i'd be reluctant to put even more pressure on him!

simple fact here is we weren't good enough with either bat or ball, although take Smith out of the Australian side and it's pretty even stevens.
