If any player has credit in the bank its Joe Root. But you are right England's catching in this series has been really poor and is probably the main reason why we are going to be 3 down by the end of this test.

Bairstow being picked remains a mystery. Not done anything remotely well.

I've seen club wicket keeper's far better than him, giving him the gloves is just another stupid decision in a long list of stupid decisions. A good keeper can set the tone in the field, a bad one who can't take simple catches, will drag the rest down with him.

We need that weather to close in. If you get tomorrow what we had yesterday, and it normally tracks west to east, you won't be playing. Steady, heavy drizzle from early on, and it only stopped an hour or so ago.

It's all a bit Gareth Southgate isn't it. Players that haven't let you down before get picked again. But cricket is all about rhythm and form and throwing JB back in after a horror injury and requiring him to use those legs behind the stumps was a big call. It would have been better to let him play a few games for Yorkshire whilst Foakes kept wicket. You could play both now, with Pope out injured. But then there's the issue of needing another seamer because of Stokes' injury and the fact Wood can't bowl too many overs.

All slightly chaotic. Patching up issues rather than picking a strong 11. The fact we've still run them close is positive. They're the best test team in the world and we're taking them all the way, and whatever happens in this series it needs to be a platform to evolve, adapt and improve in all areas.

He should have been picked as a batsman. Granted he’s not done much with that this series but his previous form last summer probably meant he was worth a place. Playing him as a wicket keeper ahead of a world class one is one of many things that’s cost us the series. Should have been Foakes ahead of Ali for this. Hoping he proves me wrong by getting some much needed runs now but not holding my breath.

The series started off well for Bairstow with the bat - he scored 78 in the first innings at Edgbaston at a run a ball - but it's all gone downhill from there
