It's a poor average for an opener, and no amount of guff can disguise that. 35 tests now, it's long past the "bedding in" stage.
Since Strauss only Joe Denly 31 , Sam Robson 30 and Nick Compton 31 have higher I belive , we certainly need a good opener just there isn't one lol

Openers as a rule, generally average less than middle order, there are exemptions but his runs today have put us in a good postion , it would be fantastic if he could kick on and get big scores , but he seems to lack that mentality
Fair comment about the openers job being tougher due to the new ball. I still think he lacks the technical and mental skills to be anything like world class or the concentration to make regular bus scores, however his batting contributions in this test have been decent

100 ^ he does but look at my last reply as to who else we have used its an area that needs improvement 100% but it's hard to jump on the kid right now I feel, although I agree we need better

The issue with Crawley is if the top 6 matched his test average (28) and say 7 dropped a bit to 20, and 8 to 11 got 10, then you’re looking at team scores of around 230. Not good enough. His 40 odd is useful but is it really good enough to be averaging 28 after so many tests?

Crawley put up the 1st and 4th highest innings of either sides top 5.

1st and 4th out of 20 innings including 8 from the 4 highest ranked test batsmen run the world and he’s probably got the most criticism for getting out.
