Australia were pretty average during the Gower/Botham captaincy years. Windies on the other hand were the best team by a mile during that era

Like you say, that was the 90s mate. Back in the 80s Australia were nothing special though in the test arena for the most part. I'd argue that they only started to come good during the 1989 Ashes series where they walloped us on our own patch 4-0 and that kick-started their period of dominance

Alderman and Hughes were still better than our bowlers.

Border, Taylor and Boon better batsman too.
 
Eoin Morgan should have been the test captain as well
I think it goes back to wanting to pick someone who's guaranteed to be in the team to be captain though, Morgan never quite found his form in test cricket. Trying to think back, but he can't have played more than 10 or so test matches for England.
