Gutting to lose that. We need to pick ourselves up though, everything possible went against us and it was still that close.

Don't make a crazy day 1 declaration we win, Broad keeps his foot behind the line first innings we win, It doesn't stop raining for 45 mins day 3 we win, we don't pick fucking Moeen Ali we win, we take one of those dropped chances we win, Jimmy doesn't have his worst game for a decade we win.

Plenty of positives despite all that, we need to take some inspiration from how Australia reacted to losing that Headingley test last series.

As much as we couldn't get the wicket we needed that evening, the Aussies had the luck generally. The weather we got for that 20minute spell was horrific. The weather they got today didn't impact things.

Fine margins. A long time away for Bairstow and it showed. Moeen's injury another blow.

But we go again and will be encouraged.

I'm positive because England can play a lot smarter in the next test if Cummins is as defensive. There were 1s and 2s all over the place and we were silly to chase boundaries at times when we could have accumulated quickly still.

It's going to be a classic. As I said to another poster I'm gutted the next one is at Lords...need hostility not champagne! Woakes and Wood have to come in, drop the spinner and rest Jimmy. Root did enough today.

Another 20/30 runs in the 1st innings was sacrificed by the declaration in my opinion. That and Root going for 14 at a critical time we’re key. However Cummings and Lyon did a great job at the end.

Agree with that In a game that ebbed and flowed as much as this it's impossible to pinpoint one moment .... but if I was to I'd the final shift in momentum was one too many overs for Root. Did his job getting the left hander and that should have been it.
 
Problem is now we have no spinner,
The bowlers look knackered and we're 1 down.

Also no idea why the stopped bowling short at Lyon when they took the new ball. He can’t stop hooking at anything chest high and he would have been caught. After the stokes drop we went away from that plan for some reason
 
That's the Ashes gone for me, I don't think England playing Bazball can beat the Aussies twice.

Over the whole test England has been sloppy in the field and bowling, Dropped catches so many No-balls and poor wicket keeping, Also add Jimmy Anderson never match fit and undercooked and Moeen Ali little finger, Robinson and Broad have kept us in the game really with Stokes Not bowling enough because of injury,

the Aussies Knew how big this win was with Lords coming up next. Their favourite ground to play us
