Correct. It's like in football, if you're level with a team on GD but have scored more goals, you finish higher.

I feel like Jody Scheckter's 1980 Formula One title defence takes some beating. From winning the championship to a lowly 19th position the following season in the same team.

His team-mate Gilles Villeneuve went from 2nd in 1979 to 14th, both drivers suffering from retirements in the early races so seems likely to be related to the cars rather than the drivers

I think England’s defence is closer to City’s title defence in 1937/8.

Good point and I would have been happy if the rules in the ODI World Cup final were on the run rate in the whole tournament if the scores were tied after the 50 overs

At county level or international? I think it’s a good game for the counties (and local leagues) for developing players in all formats but think the shorter (shortest!) game is the future internationally. There are 10x ranked test teams, 18x ODI and 87x whack-a-ball nations so it’s pretty obvious now.

If we only have 20/20 or the hundred then Cricket is fucked

Test Cricket needs the ODI 50-over game for development, batting proper and bowling 10 overs is key for test cricket.
Smash Ball cricket with little skill with bat or ball and it is Killing Cricket as a Sport.

If you want Entertainment then give 20/20 or the Hundred its own Governing body and split and Break away from Test and ODI Cricket and label it Fake Cricket
