As an aside, that 2 minute time limit seems to be a pretty short time for the next batsman to get out to the middle, and to have taken his guard, and be ready to face the next ball. But "timed out" has rarely ever happened in first class cricket, so I guess it must be okay.

It‘s 3 minutes in MCC law, but 2 in ICC.

Seems tight, as you say, and the broadcasters could guarantee an extra minute of adverts too.

If you watch any county cricket it takes a lot longer than that for an incomng batsman to face up to his first delivery.
  • He waits for the dismissed player to leave the field before he hops on to it.
  • Leisurely stroll to the middle
  • Chat with his batting partner
  • Bit of gardening to the pitch, brushing and patting down
  • Asks umpire for his guard
  • Scratches a line with his bat or boot
  • Looks round the field often pointing to fielders
  • Takes his guard
I defy anybody to do all that in 2 minutes.

3 mins in county cricket.

there's also a difference to county cricket that the batting team are in a shelter at pitchside, not in the pavilion.

Presumably the clock starts when the umpire's decision is made; it seems that Mathews' helmet strap broke as he put it on and he waited to find a new one. From what I've read, that does seem like bad form on behalf of Bangladesh; it's weird that Mathews could have walked in, faced one ball, told the umpire that the helmet was broken and it would have taken more time.
