Not finishing them off when they were 8 down and
Needing 60 more runs has lost us this. Forget the early declaration.
Exactly. Clichéd whining about early declaration, would have been lauded with only one wicket.

And (all other things being equal which they aren't) if we'd batted on there wouldn't have been time to bowl them out tonight.

I'd just play 4 seamers at Lords but Old Trafford and the Oval maybe he could come in. You have to play Foakes as well if you are going to play a leggie though imo.

That's where the current issue is. Bairstow should be in as a batsman alongside Foakes but Brook came in and has been insanely good and Pope has found form so you can't fit them all in. Stokes is actually the one you'd have to drop which clearly is madness.

Ahmed has to be the spin option. Decent with the bat as well.

Jimmy and Moeen for Wood and Woakes next test. I'm hopeful Bairstow gets sharper. First big game since his double leg break, bound to be some rust!

I see no reason why Bairstow can't open when we are clearly instructing our openers to get us off to a flying start like a One day game. Jonny is the best opening batsman in ODI cricket.

I like our aggressive playing style and appreciate that sometimes we'll be bowled out for less than perhaps we should be, but that declaration on Friday night was unforgiveable.

Do you not remember when we were all out for about 200 in every test?! This aggressive style is the reason we are scoring so many runs. We have gone from 200 all out from 80 overs to being in a position at nearly 400 on day 1 to declare. Missed chances cost us, nothing else. And the aussies batted tremendously well at 8 down.

Should have let broad and Anderson bowl at the end with their normal fields rather than getting defensive of runs.

Possibly but that's a huge call. Duckett has an excellent average and Crawley played well in this test. It is still a red ball game, I'm not sure that's the answer. What has to be accepted is Stokes' faith in the players. That's seen us win 11 out of 14 tests. Knowing you are still in despite a poor display is huge for the team.

We make drastic changes in Australia at 2-0 down and it tends to end up 5-0 as a result.

Ahmed hasn't done any bowling mate ,

Trying to stay positive. We took them to the wire with 2 fit, in form, front line bowlers. Stokes, Moeen and Jimmy way off for different reasons. Jimmy has a chance for Lords mainly because we might not play a spinner. There has to be a question mark over Bairstow at WK too.

They (Aussies) will not play as badly in the next test match with their batting, Khawaja got over 200 runs in the test match on his own the rest was poor, England needs to think long and hard about the wicket-keeper and Stokes as a bowling option at Lords, Yes we will go without a spinner and play 4 main seam bowlers, so Stokes plays higher up the batting line up and maybe Brooks misses out

I said I like our aggressive playing style.

I cant see them changing the wicket keeper at this juncture, I do see Jimmy and mo making way for wood and woakes

You can’t leave brook out. He is our 2nd best batsman already imo. Root can be the spin option at lords with woakes, wood, Broad, Robinson as the seamers

Think England could still win but that there is a streak of stubbornness that might prove their downfall. If the Australians win at Lord's, England will be in real difficulty, but by that stage it might be too late to make the necessary changes.

The Lord's test suits them down to a tee and now control the series, they always bowl top of the off stump at Lords, The wickets with it's tilt helps them because many of the batsmen just leave on length,

Mark Wood has to play the next 4 test matches if fit, even Chris Woakes could come in for Jimmy Anderson

Them extra 40 runs that they would of got on Friday before the disgraceful decision to declare on the 1st day.
Fooking embarrassing that was.
Also don’t need root dancing down the pitch when he is well set in 2nd innings, that has never been his strength and he is too good to give his wicket away. Between that and the early declaration root probably had another 70 runs in him alone.

the first test has always been about setting out your stall, don’t give anything away, hence the Friday declaration made zero sense even if England had fluked the win.

I don't like this were happy to lose mantra at all.
Bravado, carelessness and poor fiedling cost us this game.
I think Australia will walk this series.
Stokes admits he hates losing.

Time for him to prove it at Lord's. Although I can't see it. As you say for all the bravado could be another spanking.

I think England will drop Ali and bring in Wood, with Root taking on the spin duties. Anderson will be smarting at not having been thrown the ball so will be desperate to play.
