Cricket Thread

To give it full context, some people are claiming that Bairstow’s was different because Labuschagne was taking guard outside the crease.

I personally just think that’s looking for any excuse to differentiate between the two, for people already committed to bad sportsmanship point of view.

I’m more annoyed at Bairstow than any of the Australians.
Spot on. On a Sunday afternoon with a few beers inside you it's blatant cheating as usual by the scummy convict Aussie cricket team. On a Monday morning it's "Bairstow you stupid fool you've just thrown the Ashes."
No way England can claim the whiter than white high ground here. Especially Bairstow who tried it - although slightly different - earlier in the game. Stokes and McCullum were a bit embarrassing in their interviews saying they would have withdrawn the appeal and it's not the way to win a game. No they wouldn't. It's like diving for a penalty in the last minute of the World Cup Final. If it was your team doing it you'd turn a blind eye and find an excuse to justify it.

I actually think that’s a fair reason tbh. There’s a difference between a mankad or stumping someone that’s taking guard outside the crease to someone that’s re-marked his spot and then moved outside of the crease after the ball has been bowled and caught by the wicket keeper - the difference being there’s no advantage at all being sought by the batsman.

It’s all down to personal opinion and I get people that think it was ok. All on the individual and how much they care about sportsmanship though.

What I would say is things like that in the Ashes are part of what makes it great too though and that’s been the case for a while - there’s always been heroes and villains to both sides. I absolutely love Broad but him when he didnt walk after being caught a few series ago was just as bad an example of poor sportsmanship as today was. If people do think today was poor, then I’d hope they’d be consistent and think that was at the time too. Sport and partisan thought does go hand in hand though!

Personally, I’d err on wanting to see better sportsmanship every time.
What was Broad's reason/excuse/explanation/justification for not walking?

From the footage I've see of yesterday, the umpire appeared to be in the process of turning round to the bowler to hand his cap back as the Carey threw the ball at the stumps

thanks - difficult to judge as I don't know his usual behaviour at the end of an over. He's certainly reaching to release the cap from whatever he's clipped it to, but it seems to be just out of the camera shot. I don't think the umpire had moved his feet. The bowler is obviously many yards down the pitch.

What I hadn't realised is that Bairstow may still have been in his crease when the ball was thrown, it's a lot closer to a normal stumping in timing than I'd realised yesterday. Moving a split second later and he'd have been fine.

Green was halfway down the track in his follow through and nowhere near the umpire, the umpire had moved from standing still

One was 30.1 overs
The other on a completed over .
There is a huge difference believe it or not .
