England's best batsman, but probably the worst England captain

Look, sometimes being named captain is not for you. From being one of the lads to being captain, you have to distance yourself from being one of the lads and stand up to the role, putting your mates' noses out of joint and telling them how it's going to be or saying to a bowler, I want you to bowl to this field setting or this length and line is hard

Joe Root should never have been given the captain's role at such a young age because it was never going to work with his teammates. Yes, they let him down and knew they had an easy life; the bowlers' union of Anderson and Broad would set their fields themselves, but Root should have stopped that right away and stood up to them and dropped one or both,

When you watched the Aussie captains, they took responsibility and control of the team in all departments and showed who's boss, 100% in control and strong with an idea's or when it needs a change,

England's captains have been weak since Andrew Strauss

Unfortunately there's quite a few captains that you could argue over. I never thought he was captain material, doesn't really have that aura about him. We have a history of just picking our best player as captain and it shouldn't be that way. Probably worrying that they do that as they're concerned the captain need to always be in the 11 and there aren't many that are good enough to be a shoo-in.

I just enjoy watching him for his talent. Don't have to worry about the captaincy issues any more. Will enjoy him while I can.

Just been looking up England Captains. Root won 27 out of 64 tests as captain (42%). Mike Gatting won 2 out of 23 (just over 8%).Gower won 5 out of 32 (15.6%). Botham won 1 out of 7 (14%).Flintoff won 2 out of 11 (18%). And they're just the more high profile captains in the last 30 or so years.


Hussain wasn't actually too bad; 17 wins out of 45 tests (nearly 38%)!

Standard of players in each side/era also has a major impact in win percentage.

Root was an average captain. Loads better and loads worse.

He wasn’t a galvaniser when the chips were down, so looked worse than he actually was.

Agreed. As I said earlier, he was a poor captain. He didn't come across as a natural leader of men. But he wasn't the worst. Nowhere near. The best in that era I was referring to? Probably Strauss or Cook. With a nod in Vaughan's direction.

Didn't Gower and Botham keep having the great West Indies team and Australia? Sometimes the other lot are just better!
