Although I've obviously no idea what he was like really, he did come across, unlike most of the South Africans who jumped ship, as a decent kind of guy.

My abiding memory of him is watching him semi successfully trying to take the fight to the ruthless West Indian attack, during the '89-'90 tour.

Will Jacks will be coming in for Mark Wood. Liam Dawson must feel very hard done by.

Dawson got his chance in the summer, was shit with the ball on a pitch turning at right angles and reportedly ignored Stokes' instructions. He also said he wasn't interested in touring with the test side unless he was guaranteed to be starting, wasn't interested "carrying water".

He'll probably not play for England again and only has himself to blame.

He dropped a dolly too from memory.

If all of that is true, then yes, I doubt he’ll play for England again.

I know he failed to impress against Zimbabwe but I’d like to see Sam Cook given another opportunity.

Honestly as far as the main spinner goes I'm happy to see the Bashir experiment play out.

County cricket hasn't produced a good spinner since Swann around 2005. The theory of getting the best young kid and just having him do an apprenticeship with the test team, playing on wickets in India, NZ, Pakistan etc. being with the best coaches every week and playing against Test batsmen in the nets for a few years and seeing if he can develop into a test quality spinner is worth a punt. He just turned 22. Swann got his test debut at 28, Lyon 24, Ashwin 25.

It's not like we're losing out on some incredible bowling performances by sticking with him over Cook, Dawson, Leach etc. If Ahmed or Vaughan, Coles, Hartley start taking loads of wickets @20.00 in county cricket then maybe you have to think about bringing them in on merit, but honestly I think if it was the 90's or early 00's people would have just accepted the Bashir plan, waited 3/4 years to see if it works and not felt the need to turn every selection into a referendum on it.

I think Jacks has been picked just as a batsman who can bowl a bit for this test. No one expected a frontline spinner to play this test and Australia wouldn't be playing Lyon if not for their injuries. The 4 seamers should get 20 wickets and lengthening the tail strengthens Englands strength, the batting lineup.

Sam Cook isn't a spinner. I feel like he should have had more of a chance last summer as a seamer though, he's been exceptional in the CC for a number of years now. Possibly a bit too slow to be a threat across the globe but he did well for the Lions in Australia on their previous tour and will always be a threat in English conditions.

There's too much noise around this England side. Not only are they getting it from the Aussies, the English media are all over them too. I'm certain Pope, Root and Brook know they should have done better in the 2nd innings. Maybe they could have prepared more, but who knows. Those calling for it played plenty of warm up games before getting battered when they toured Australia.

It's a place England don't tend to do very well in. The English media have hyped the team up only to now destroy them. This might not be a vintage Aussie side, but it's still very good and let's be honest this isn't a very good England side anyway. There are some excellent players but we haven't won a 5 test series in years and for me it was blind optimism and ignorance to facts that could convince you we'd win it. It's not over yet, but I don't think we need to dissect things to the extent they are being cut apart in the media. A number of our players have excellent averages and have scored plenty of runs with the aggressive style of play. It forces the opposition to change their bowling approach which we can often profit from.

I recognise Cummins and Hazlewood didn't play the 1st test, but their bowling attack still boasted a combined 1076 test wickets whilst ours had 511. Cummins and Hazlewood have 604 combined by the way. England bowled very well and but for a collapse in the middle order could have won the game. Decent start and the "over in 2 days" rhetoric is misleading. If we'd lost by an innings I'd have understood it, but it wasn't a complete battering by any stretch and we can take the positives from our bowling in the first innings. Head took plenty of risks in his innings, they won't always come off.

Let's see what happens in Brisbane. We've got a better batting lineup on paper, and enough bowling to take 20 wickets. Australia are weaker with the bat than the ball. If we can bat better then I think we can win this test. We've all made a big fuss about a spinner and Lyon's role but based on spin averages in Australia in the last 6 years it might not be an issue. We have quite a few that play spin well and the games might not last long enough to bring it into play anyway. Perth's the best for spin which surprised me, followed by the MCG but at an average of 35.

I agree with this but they also bring a lot of it on themselves. Stokes has had to apologise for the "has-beens" comment now, which was just a really stupid thing to say, and if they'd come out after the second test and said "We're not sending players to the Day/Night warm up because think the conditions and pitch in Canberra are so different to Brisbane that practicing at the Gabba for 2 weeks is better preparation for the 2nd test" then everyone would have understood and left them alone.

Instead they came out and said some arrogant stuff about not changing their plans and it took 3/4 days for the press secretary to get the real reasoning out to all the pundits - at which point most of the ones who'd been angry and annoyed about the idea said actually it was a fair point.

They don't realise that 99% of the fans and pundits just want them to play well and are on their side.

Sorry - I am aware but can see how that could have been misinterpreted in my previous comment.

Hopefully he hasn’t been completely disregarded because as you say, he’d be a threat at home and in certain away conditions.

Yeah can't argue with that.

It points to a mentality within the camp which is a bit of a worry. Stokes talks about playing the match for what it is rather than using the criticism as motivation but clearly the team feel harshly judged and are withdrawing into that mentality when honesty would be respected.

Bring on the second test, we have had enough talking now!

I think I will wait for the toss and see who bowls first. It's a big toss to win and bowl with the pink ball

I don't see how England can turn this around from the last test ? Our batting was shocking in both innings and this pink ball moves both ways. Even if England puts away the Bazball and tries to bat and score, we will be sitting ducks.
What are the Odds for most LBW wickets in England's innings, This is so going to happen if they try batting ? lack of leg and feet movement will happen because all we know is swing from the hips.

Maybe Bazball will be the way to play in this test and England could get lucky, but I will not hold my breath
