Cricket Thread

I really love watching cricket especially on a lovely sunny day there is not much better.

But what has happened to our current crop, they have no fight or desire to remain at the crease. They treat every game as a one day match.

The ECB want to take a long hard look at how our up and coming players can be coached into playing the required way to become proper test match cricketers.
Yes agreed
It's the consequences of too much white ball cricket.

The question is, can test match cricket still fit into modern-day living with people wanting instant results
A sport that lasts over 5 days doesn't do anything for them. Kids have everything at their fingertips, with a click of a button or swipe of a screen, they have a timescale of about 30 seconds before moving on

Test match cricket needs something to help it and cope with all this instant white-ball cricket ?
Maybe countries like England can build big indoor stadiums and play all year round

They are now tours in name only. They used to play 15 games on a tour to Australia 5 of which would be Test Matches. Gradually the number of matches has been reduced to the point on this tour where they have been non-existent. The poor sods in bygone days used to travel by ship taking up to 6 weeks with a stop over in Colombo. On the way back they would stop off in New Zealand for a Test Series. How work loads change.

When we have the ashes in our country the Australian who are going to play in it come over and play county cricket! If your an England player who never played in Australia you’d thought they’d go over and play shield cricket..

It isn't allowed and if it was there is not break in England schedule to allow it if they play ODIs as well.

It would get very busy with the Ranji Trophy, CSA 4 dayers etc before every tour.

Thought they were under ECB contracts surely they’d give them permission? It is it shield cricket don’t allow it?

Cricket Australia don't allow it, they control it, and everything has to be for the good of the national team these days.

The ECB could ban Australians doing the same, but it would need to apply to all other countries too for CC games, and the overseas players are too much of an attraction, it would be the final nail for the CC.

Yeah ecb and the counties it’s all about the money Australia it’s all about getting the best Australian players for there international team!

Putting the shocking Hundred in August says it all! That’s one of the best months for four day game but they want this shite new type of cricket in the prime of the season! We get about 4 and half months of summer and we piss it of for money making short game

Or moving live test match coverage to terrestrial television
What do kids see in a thirty minute highlight show?

Yep.. Free-to-air test cricket can be a start, but it needs something else to keep viewers glued.
I do like the day-night test with the pink ball, I think it would be fantastic in a huge indoor stadium, also it could be played all year round with drop-in wickets.

But I fear white-ball 20/20 or the hundred has cornered the market with fast cricket with results
You know it's coming, the white ball Ashes series with 3 games of 50 overs and 3 games of 20/20

Tests and county cricket need to break away from 20/20 white ball cricket and have their own governing body and players. No crossing over by coaches or players, it's your choice red ball or white ball cricket.

Whilst I agree in principle, the big money is in white ball cricket.
It's made millionaires of players nowhere near good enough to play test cricket. Actually some of em aren't technically good enough to play 4-day county cricket.

And there isn't the money available to pay test cricketers more than they would get playing IPL, Big Bash etc...

Something people don't mention often when it comes to the level of the game in this country is the weather. Maybe it's actually quite impressive that we've been competitive in international cricket over the years given our weather is so shit?

Long format would be like the BDO on lithium, amatuer and a toxic brand which eventually collopses.

The thing is, test cricket is stuck on the basics and doesn't want changes. It was the same years ago, with uncovered wickets and many other little changes. Test cricket needs something to bring back the fans

I don't want 4 day test matches but maybe some new rules on overrates and the amount of overs a bowler can bowl Also, a spinner has to play, so let's say maximum 80 overs a day, 3 bowlers and a spinner all have 20 overs maximum
Then it's the close of innings

4-day test matches with a maximum 80 overs per innings with a weather extra 5th day if needed

Need a premier like break away with the top 6 counties it’s ridicules how many counties there is the standard is utter shite

I said the same at the weekend.
18 counties is ridiculous.
Say there's a squad of 20 for all, that's 360 top quality cricketers.
That just isn't gonna to happen.

They should make it so they have to bowl 90 overs in a day.
That would get countries to pick at least one spinner.

If it means playing till 7, tough. That's your evening plans ruined.
Captains f****** about every ball, bowlers moving a fielder etc...
Then the batsman messing about.

Trust me if they were getting back to their hotels at 9pm they'd soon get on with it.
