Crippled By Control

Anyone who is saying the defence is sorted is clueless.
Cancelo while he adapts himself well most times is not a natural left back.
We are a Club that does not need to play players out of position.
He was bought to cover Walker who was not having the best season.
If Walker is rested he will go to right back and that will let Mendy in which I am sure no one wants.
I question why we bought Ake when it was obvious that LB was a priority.
It's no use saying he can play there.
To let Angelino go was a massive fuck up.
Whilst not being the greatest he is better than Mendy and Zink. Far Far Better.

That is the big difference. We used to have a great defence with a back 4, fernandinho and playing an offensive style, wingers making the pitch as big as possible, and two 8s playing an advanced roles between the oppositions midfield and defence (2017/18).

Now we have a good defence with a back 4, two holding midfielders, two wingers (inc one midfielder) playing on opposite flanks to help control the central areas of the pitch.

Were having to lose a lot to have this good defence.

Exactly. I think he’ll eventually get balance right.

It's not often I wake up still fuming about a football performance these days but last night has really irked me. I know some won't like this because we're seen as babies spitting dummies out etc, feel free to scroll past.

But there was something very different about last night. No energy, no spirit, no desire. I absolutely hate this word and the context it gets used in but we showed no real passion to go and get the win. I remember when Mancini was in charge and if we were drawing in the second half at some point we would throw the kitchen sink at the opposition. He would make subs, move players around and even have 3/4 strikers on the pitch. The desire, effort and quality would always get us over the line. In these past 18 months under Pep we don't have that. If we're drawing after an hour, or god forbid losing, no one has any confidence that we'll do enough to go force a win.

Now don't get me wrong we have lost a lot of quality from the squad. We are bare in positions we were once loaded.

But that doesn't excuse the lack of passion, will to win and all the other intangibles you inevetibly need to progress to get from our current level to the next.

So what's the reason? Well we've had all the excuses. If only we bench Mahrez. If only we had a competent centre back. Wait until our full backs are fit. It's the inverted wingers. It's Jesus. Bla bla bla we could go on forever but the reality is this has been a slow regression for 18 months culminating in performances that are so soulless we have to start looking beyond team selections. There are only so many variations of players and formations you can try.

So my conclusion is that we are crippled by control. The players look like they are worn down playing like they're robots where they are expected to keep possession and position 100% of the time. What happened to our fluidity? I was watching Foden play last night and after a shit first half he began to play well in the second. He was buzzing around, moving laterally and looking to play through balls in tight spaces. What happened? He was hooked off. Can't do that I'm afraid, Mr Foden. We must keep possession at all times. We have become a no risk low reward team. What happened to our intuition? What happened to our players fizzing around and creating chances through their genius? They look hamstrung to me. Devoid of ideas and playing without any fun. In fact they look pained. Pained by control and pained by what happens if they go against what they're told and god forbid give the ball away on the opposition's 18 yard line. They are playing without any expression.

The other side of crippled by control is covid. If we know one thing about Pep it's that he gasses players out after a few years. Covid must multiply this tenfold. Not only are the players controlled by government guidelines as to what they can and cannot do I can only imagine what the club are relaying to them about their responsibilities. Don't go out, don't go to a restaurant, don't take your kids to a park, don't go on holiday etc. I'm sure being a player for Pep there are times when you need a break, to get away and don't think about football. They obviously can't do that.

I know that we're all in the same position with the last part. Life is shit right now and we can't blame Pep or the club for that.

But Pep can help with the control on the field by allowing the players to express themselves. Trust them, they're half decent. Play De Bruyne deeper, lose the double pivot, get an extra attacker on the pitch and start showing the desire to go and win a game. Don't sit around after the game and say only one team wanted to win, we had 20 chances, we controlled the game etc. Trust your defence, this is the best one we've had for a long time with more options than ever. Allow your players to make mistakes in the search to unlocking doors.

Take the shackles off, we have nothing to lose.
What if he’s building a solid foundation that’s he’s going to put Aguero and Messi on top of? :-)

I was chatting with a bloke at work about us, my opinion is we are that over trained and drilled with tactics, that in games, we are just going through the motions, like a machine, no spark or flair, flat.

The players heads have been burned out by Pep’s intensity. It’s impossible to maintain a peak for so long without refreshing the squad as you do it which we haven’t done. Like Ahsan said in the 9320 pod, after our last league title, Fergie would have binned off some faces and brought top class new blood in. This summer should see the exit for Ferna, Aguero, Rodri, and 2 of Sterling/Mahrez/Bernardo. Or perhaps all 3!

Sounds good on paper but it’s unrealistic. We lost Kompany just over a year ago, Silva and Sane last year and Aguero and Fernandinho are in their last year. You can’t just sell 2/3 more because then you’re effectively blowing the whole thing up. I understand the idea but with the way we’re losing legends on a yearly basis we have to rebuild carefully.

And our squad isn’t the problem. Yes we could be better in a couple of positions but it doesn’t excuse the last 18 months. And I’m not really buying the burnout either since Liverpool have gone toe to toe with us for 3/4years and outperformed us in the CL, are down some big injuries this year but are still way ahead of us at the moment.

Our record against top half teams has been awful for quite a while now. We’re flat track bullies. Hopefully yesterday is a big step in the right direction.

I suggested yesterday that we might look more solid in the middle and have more threat if we go with a three at the back?

Wanting to accommodate all the ball-playing abilities to include Stones, Dias and Laporte.

Fuck the wingers off and have Cancelo and Walker as the wide threats, tucking in to make a five and omit the snail formerly known as Rodri.

Something like this?

................ Ederson...........
...... Stones.. Dias.... Laporte
Walker...Bernie... Gundo..Foden...Cancelo
......................KDB..............
........................... Sergio......

It has legs in the midfield, plus Bernie and Foden have the desire and technical ability to free up less emphasis for Gundo to come and receive the ball from our defenders.

It would have runners beyond Sergio and leave KDB closer to goal where he is needed.

Conte did this early season at Chelsea after struggling for goals and they never looked back, winning the title with Victor Moses playing wing back.

Moses was outstanding that season as well

With Eddie that's like having 4 Beckenbauers. What a fantastic prospect.
