Crippled By Control

Crippled by control... cowards in front of goal.

Got a nice ring to it.

The general play was better but the last part rings true.

We needed to play Delap. We have no focal point up top, it's KDB who's jumping with Vestegaard for the ball. It made no sense.

Liverpool showing today why they are way ahead of us now, they are so deadly in front of goal. We scored loads the last couple of seasons, but missed just as many.
Agreed, they’re clearly back in form and it wouldn’t surprise me to see them pulling away from the rest of the pack. Our best bet is to concentrate on champs league and secure a top 4 place if we can.

I think Pep got fed up of having to score 3 to win a match, there’s a definite change of approach. Probably because our defence in last few seasons was never going to win a CL.

He is reinventing himself and when he gets the balance right, and he will (practically no Aguero all season), we could be his best side yet. Mouthwatering prospect.

Sorry thought this was about the government handling of covid.

today’s game wasn’t exactly an advert for giving up control. We had no control but it didn’t result in better chances in more space. Having said that we are struggling to be direct instead of slowing play down. Lack of striker a big issue

You do realise the defence was brilliant when we pipped the scousers to the league and the season before too we had one of the best defensive midfielders the league has ever seen?

I agree tbh. Midway through the game I wanted us to keep the ball better. But I was hoping to see the faster tempo, attacking in numbers, the aggression, the desire, the risk taking etc and all of that was there. We have a basis to build on now, if we can find a way to balance today with the rest of this season we’ll go well. And the Saints are no joke, arguably the form team right now so this was a brilliant result.

That is the big difference. We used to have a great defence with a back 4, fernandinho and playing an offensive style, wingers making the pitch as big as possible, and two 8s playing an advanced roles between the oppositions midfield and defence (2017/18).

Now we have a good defence with a back 4, two holding midfielders, two wingers (inc one midfielder) playing on opposite flanks to help control the central areas of the pitch.

Were having to lose a lot to have this good defence.
