Croatia ??

I went there when I was a kid back in 1990 in a place called UMAG where they have the Croatian tennis open. It was a great holiday of what I remember and my mum and dad still rank it as one of there best holidays. This was obviously before the war so cant really comment on the place today.

A brief period in Dubrovnik, but Dalmatia as a whole is brilliant.

So many different cultures that get on really well these days.

-- Sat Dec 29, 2012 12:12 am --

I was born in Croatia and in place you'd certainly want to visit - Dubrovnik. My parents still live there.

What would you like to know?

Dubrovnik really is the Jewel in the Crown.

We went there this summer and had a brilliant holiday. Stayed in Lapad about 4k ( or a 40 p bus ride!) outside Dubrovnik. Nice hotel if room was a bit basic but with stunning views over the bay, and fabulous weather. Beer, food and entertainment all reasonably priced and excellent quality. You need to check out the Old Town of Dubrovnik (people watch on the Strada) and try one of the Island tours by sea.
If you can imagine Southern Tenerife without the tackiness, that's what its like.
Don't be surprised if some of the older waiters/ taxi drivers etc don't seem to get too fussed if you have a minor drama such as lost luggage or room key etc however . They will have seen some serious shit in a fairly recent war, are all hard as nails, and will make it fairly clear that your problem needs to be kept in perspective!
Oh, and the Russian girls on the beach were well fit!
Enjoy!

Not been before but it's certainly a place I'd love to go to and will one day soon. Know a couple of people who have been and said it was beautiful.

I believe the government are slashing VAT to 10% next year for all touristy type things to encourage more visitors, looks like 2013 is the year to visit.

To the OP, there are some pretty attractive air fares to Split for various dates in and around next summer, let me know if you want further details (been looking myself recently, just need the other half to OK it!)

Lapad is still very integral part of Dubrovnik :) My house is across the bay, in Gruz, some 500m from that bridge on the city entrance.

And it's Stradun, that main street in Old Town.

Dubrovnik is beautiful city, specially the historic Old Town part. It's nice for family holiday, I'm not really sure it's perfect place for young people who are for night life and such as it's very poor in that department though there are loads of young tourists too.

It's pretty expensive for local standards, no chance in a hell local could afford himself a dinner in restaurant during tourist season. But I've spoke with lot of UK and Irish people while I was living there and they did not find it too expensive, I guess you guys have good wages over there.
